Product Description

Product Description

This autofocus circular fisheye lens has an angle of view of 180 degrees in all directions. It is exclusively designed for digital SLR cameras with the APS-C size image sensor. When used in conjunction with digital SLRs with APS-C size image sensors, it produces circular image within the frame. The F2.8 large aperture value produces a bright image in the viewfinder and allows photographers to take pictures in low light conditions, making it an ideal lens for Astrophotography and Aurora photography. Due to the quantifiable angle / area relationship it produces, this lens can be used for scientific and arts applications such as solid angle measurements of cloud distribution over the sky or vegetation distribution of the forest. The minimum focusing distance of 13.5cm / 5.3inch and maximum magnification of 1:6 make it particularly useful for close-up photography. SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass provides effective compensation of chromatic aberration. Sigma's Super Multi-Layer Coating minimizes flare and ghosting. It is equipped with an inner focusing system that creates high definition and good image quality over the whole frame. The HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) ensures fast and quiet autofocusing and allows full-time manual focus override by rotation of the focus ring.

The sigma 4.5mm fisheye is a full 180 field of view lens. It distorts the image a great deal; and only uses about 1/4 of the frame in your APS camera. There are two uses for it; scientific recording and taking some unusual perspective photos.

If you are trying to work out cloud cover or foliage coverage then straight up photos give you a horizon to horizon view for your calculations then its a great lens for science. It is able to take images in fairly low light and is a small rugged lens you can carry about.

If you are an adventurous photographer or looking for a different view you can take some amazing looking photos with this lens by embracing the distortion. I have uploaded some sample images; one from a temple in Egypt and the other from a hotel staircase. There is a flickr group full of excellent images from this lens.

The HSM motor is quiet; but not as quiet as a Canon L series lens. You can almost use the lens as a macro as it can focus very close to the edge of the lens. You have to be very careful with the position of the sun in any photo as it can lead to overexposures. Its for AFS cameras only.

Its one of 3 lenses that always travel with my camera after i have taken the sensible photos I try and go around and take the more unusual ones.

Great for equirectangular panoramas 27 Jun 2009
By Steve Mokris - Published on Amazon.com

Combined with Nodal Ninja rotating tripod heads, I'm using this lens to produce equirectangular 360deg x 180deg panoramas. Six shots in 60deg increments work perfectly when stitched with Hugin or AutoPano.

Limited depth of field is a problem --- I find that typically I have to operate the lens at f/11 or f/16 to get decent full-frame-in-focus results, which necessitates shutter times of > 0.5s indoors, so it's only really useful for static scenes.
