Product Description

Product Description

High-performance wide-angle lens, designed exclusively for mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras. This high-performance standard lens has the equivalent angle of view as a 28.5mm (35mm equivalent focal length) on the E-mount sytem. The ultra-compact and lightweight construction guarantees excellent mobility, making it perfect for many types of photography.

Three glass mold aspherical lenses allow this lens to be compact and lightweight. They also ensure excellent correction for distortion and provide high image quality throughout the frame. The inner focusing system corrects the fluctuation of aberration to maintain image quality regardless of the focusing position. Image quality is enhanced further with Sigma’s Super Multi-Layer Coating which reduces flare and ghosting and provides high contrast images even in backlit conditions.

This lens benefits from a newly developed linear AF motor which moves the lens unit directly without the need for gears or the drive of other mechanical parts. This system ensures accurate and almost silent autofocusing, making the lens suitable for video recording as well as still photos. The AF unit is controlled by electromagnetics meaning it will only operate when power from the camera is sent to the lens. If the lens is not attached to the camera or the camera is switched off, the AF unit will move freely inside the lens.

The lens features a rounded 7 blade diaphragm creates an attractive, smooth blur to the out-of-focus parts of the image. The wide focus ring ensures improved usability when manually focusing and the minimum focusing distance of 20cm and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:7.4 make it ideal for close-up photography.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bargain wide(ish) lens. 13 Jan 2013

While not as sharp as its 30mm stablemate, this 19mm (28.5mm equivelent on NEX) ia an excellent and inexpensive option for wide angled photography on the Sony NEX/E-Mount platform. The colours and contrast are good and the lens seems well made. Compared to equivalent lenses on my Canon EOS system this is a real bargain.

4.0 out of 5 stars Adequate lens for Sony NEX 18 Mar 2013
Amazon Verified Purchase
I use the lens with Sony NEX3. It seems to be on par with the resolution of NEX3. I suspect it is not enough for NEX 7 sensor.

It is quite sharp even wide-open, little bit sharper in the center. It outperforms clearly the kit zoom, as most fixed lenses do. Contrast is from average to good.

Flaring resistance is even better than I expected, it has hood, that comes with the lens. Chromatic aberration (CA) is the weakest point of this lens. Not noticeable at normal size view of pictures, but always there at 100% crop. But it can be removed on post processing at will.

Build quality ideology is different from Sony lenses. There is rattle when the camera is off and there is a very audible click when the lens is engaged to auto-focus. Also it has little slower autofocus, compared to Sony lenses. Also, it has quite cheap plastic outlook.

But for me there are also very positive news about this lens build. First it is much lighter compared to other set of lenses. So it serves good on vehicle mount, does not initiate extra vibrations to the camera. Second, the cheap look does not appeal the camera or lens to criminals. So you dare more with it in some situations.

I love the small pouch for lens also. This should be the must for every lens producer, to offer something similar with their lenses.

Given the limited selection of E-mount lenses for the Sony NEX, this Sigma 19mm f/2.8 is a good buy for anyone looking for a good prime lens to use with an NEX camera. The lens is priced reasonably compared to other NEX lenses. It is not as brilliant as is Sigma 30mm lens, but it does the job and does it well!

Just what I needed for flower studies. Colours are brilliant but accurate, with good contrast but not exaggerated. Flare is well controlled.
