Product Description

Product Description

The world’s first 180mm 1:1 macro lens with a fast, f/2.8 maximum aperture. This lens includes three FLD glass elements that have a performance equal to fluorite and ensure exceptional correction of axial chromatic aberration and lateral chromatic aberration. A floating inner focusing system moves two different lens groups in the optical path to different positions. This system compensates for astigmatism and distortion and provides extremely high optical performance from infinity to 1:1 macro. The overall length does not change during focusing, ensuring convenient handling. Metal parts are used in the lens barrel ensuring high durability of the body.

FLD glass
This lens features three FLD (“F” Low Dispersion) glass elements, which have the performance equal to fluorite glass. FLD glass is the highest level low dispersion glass available with extremely high light transmission. This optical glass has a performance equal to fluorite glass which has a low refractive index and low dispersion compared to current optical glass. It also benefits from high anomalous dispersion. These characteristics give excellent correction for residual chromatic aberration (secondary spectrum) which cannot be corrected by ordinary optical glass and ensures high definition and high contrast images.

Super Multi Layer Coating
The optics are coated with Sigma’s Super Multi-Layer Coating which reduces flare and ghosting and ensures high contrast images. High image quality is assured throughout the entire focusing range.

Optical Stabiliser
This is the first 180mm optically stabilised telephoto macro lens in the world and offers effective correction of approximately 4 stops. The system compensates for camera shake even in the macro range photography where only a small amount of blur can be easily identified.
* The OS effectiveness will gradually decrease as the shooting distance becomes shorter.

F2.8 large aperture tele-macro lens
Tele macro lenses have a greater working distance. It is possible to enjoy Macro photography, even when you are far from the subject. This enables you to capture the small animals and insects without disturbing them. The very narrow depth-of-field allows selective focusing and less distracting backgrounds. Large aperture of F2.8 also makes this lens ideal for sports, action and indoor photography.

Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) with full time manual focus override
The HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) ensures quiet and high speed autofocus as well as full-time manual focus capability.

Rounded 9 blade aperture ring
This lens has a rounded 9 blade diaphragm creating a smooth blur to the out of focus areas of the image.

What a lens 14 Feb. 2013

Fast, sharp and accurate! The image stabilizer is fantastic. My first one did have a defect but Adorama and Amazon got a new one to me within two days! I think it is the best fast 180 macro you can buy. Look at my facebook to see some images.

WOW 3 Sept. 2013

I have been a professional photographer for over 40 years. I now have only the best equipment available. Before this lens I had the Sigma 150/2.8 Macro OS lens. Great, but this one is better. The 150 OS only gives you about 1.5 to 2 stops of help with the OS. This 180 has a full 4 stops of help - at any distance. Very fast AF though, to be honest, I only use MF. I have owned about 15 different macro lenses over the years. This is the best one if you need modern features, AF, etc. The only other contender that I own is the Leica APO 100/2. macro lens - legendary. A 100 and a 180 macro make a great combination. Anything less than 100mm gives poor perspective, small working distance and other issues. Well worth the high price. Comes with hood, removeable rotating tripod collar - both are must haves in my book.

Manual Focusing Issues 5 Sept. 2013
By Mike A Rickard - Published on Amazon.com

This is a macro lense, so of course I use it for nature close-ups. I shoot 20,000+ snaps a year of butterflies and dragonflies. For dragonflies and damselflies manual focusing is essential, and the Sigma lens makes this very difficult by having a stiff focusing ring. It is very hard to rotate the ring just the micro-millimeter required, so that one keeps rotating the ring back and forth hoping to achieve focus before the subject flies away. My Canon 100mm macro and 300mm EF lenses do not have this problem. I considered the Canon 180mm macro but it is an old lens and I had read good things about the Sigma. For AF shots of butterflies I do get sharp results and am happy with that aspect. Wish there was a way to lubricate the focusing ring though.

Great macro for Insects. 10 Aug. 2013

This lens is great for insects since you can keep your distance a bit. It is also good for other macro shots as well since you don't have to get as close. Saves your knees and back since you don't have to get right on top of your subject and the extra distance helps get more light on your subject which can be a challenge in macro.

One of my best Macro Lens 21 Jun. 2014

This lens really surprised me. I have other SIGMA lens and they normally are very good, so my expectation was set to a very good lens. However, this lens is a super performer. If you visit my truetoad site, Portfolio (macro and flowers) you will see a few examples.
In the macro section you will find a "morning Life" image taken hand held in natural sunlight. In the flower section "my easter flower collection" you will find some examples.

The build quality is top notch and feels solid with a good quality touch to it.
- Performance of this lens for both Macro, portraiture is outstanding, super sharp and contrasty images; I own other Brand Name Macros and this lens is as good or better.

SIGMA knocked it out of the park with this lens.
