5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Compulsive!, 28 Jan 2005
By A Customer
This game came free with our PS2. My son turned up his nose at it (no gory shoot-outs)so I had a go and I can't put it down! The long levels are a challenge, but you can try and complete absolutely everything, or just a few basics and keep going. No you don't blast peoples heads off in a shower of gore, mostly you fight close-up with rocks and sword, but the real challenge is HOW you fight. Technique is everything. There's a real sense of achievement when the enemy finally succumbs in a blaze of colour! It's bright, fun and can be very frustrating. You can only save when you arrive at a save-station, and they are few and far between when you need them most! I haven't completed the game yet. What I can say is, it gets harder and harder so you think wow this is a little kid's game, but by the time you get to the 'Flies and Spiders' level you're really challenged! Absolutely ace! Maybe one day I'll let my son have a go!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the best game I have played, 29 Feb 2004
It is not overly hard but it is such a nice concept. To find a game that is really big and has such nice features as playing hide and seek with some little Hobbits to sneaking around a dragon and fighting goblins and spiders!!

I have very much enjoyed this game and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys long platform games!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Generally a mixed bag., 16 Feb 2004

(REAL NAME)
To mop up any confusion this is not a remake of the old 8 bit text RPG from the eighties (real shame) this is a brand new 3rd person action platform adventure with you in control of Bilbo Baggins
It's a game I really wanted to like more than I actually do, because there are several niggling problems.

1. Hobbit's have very small legs - Is a platform game really a suitable genre? Perhaps not, Bilbo cannot jump very far, and despite having a great walking stick/pole vault type super jump you will often find yourself falling to your death. Either via a chasm, or into a river. (Bilbo can't swim!!)

2. Bilbo isn't very 'hard'. Despite having three different weapons, walking stick, Sting (yes it glows brightly when goblins are near and helpfully lights the way in dark caverns) and throwing rocks, Bilbo has no block feature to speak of. Your offensive attacks increase in power and style as you progress, but most battles with three or more enemies will have you running away (you can't run very fast at all BTW) quicky hitting the target button throwing a few rocks then repeationg the procedure. This becomes more apparent the deeper into the game you get.

Despite these flaws, what this game does right, it does great. Most of the levels are huge, and you can just do the basics, or search around everywhere looking for more bonuses, graphics are pleasant all round (look out for that camera though) with some luscious cut scenes, and the music is truly fantastic and really sets the mood. It really depends on what you want to get out of it, if you're into great exploration then the game will last twice as long and present you with great satisfaction as the end level screen adds up your totals. If however you're easily put off by less than perfect controls and programming then steer clear. But for any hard core Tolkein fan, the opening level some justify the price alone.
