Amazon.co.uk Review

With the popularity of Half Life growing month by month and Counterstrike the add-on, fuelling this further, many hard-core gamers are turning their talents to developing add-ons to the games. One keen Half Life player decided to do just that, but when he showed Valve, Half Life's developers, they were so stunned that they have released it as a standalone game.

Based, therefore, on the Half Life engine, this game has all the intensity of Aliens vs Predator, the storyline of Half Life and the AI of Soldier of Fortune, showing them that Gunman Chronicles is how a game should be don.

With the introduction of some new weapons, the ability to drive vehicles and dinosaurs roaming the countryside, you've got a game that takes the mantle forward for Valve.

The storyline, like Half Life, is very consuming and you can easily get sucked in to the realm that is The Gunman Chronicles. Although the game has some great niceties, like dinosaurs that attack you or the bad guys while you are in the middle of a fire fight--very handy if they eat them rather than you--the games weapon system can be at times slightly awkward to the unfamiliar player.

While most games offer a secondary fire to weapons, Gunman Chronicles tries to take this a step further by offering three of four. Options-wise, this is great, but you can't help but feel that an extra hand would come in handy sometimes to access the additional weapons.

Putting this minor point aside, if you are a fan of Half Life or the first-person shooter--and lets face it, who isn't?--then Gunman Chronicles is going to be right up your street for the next big challenge.

If, though, the genre is slightly unfamiliar to you, although a great place to start, a better option would be to try something a little less complicated, like Half Life and work your way up. --Stuart Miles

Product Description

Gunman Chronicles is a story-driven, first-person game powered by the Half-Life engine. Players take the role of a futuristic Gunman, with a mission to destroy the alien Xenomes that mysteriously began appearing five years earlier. Now, it seems that someone has been altering their DNA, allowing them to be bigger and stronger, plus the Xenomes are spreading somehow to planets across the western spiral arm of the galaxy. Levels range from dinosaur-infested jungle ruins to techno-wastelands. In order to rid the galaxy of the evil aliens, players can customise their weapons, control vehicles such as tanks, and be assisted by computer-controlled characters. There are also multiplayer game modes available for play over the Internet.

half of Half-Life 15 May 2003
Format:Video Game
It's not Half-Life. You try and forget that when you play Gunman, but it's really difficult, considering just about everything in this game will remind you of Freeman, Slaves, and the rest of the classic. Even the grunts look decidedly Barney-ish.
It's not as bad as some reviews make out. It's short, but while it lasts, it's a lot of fun, and I for one certainly went back for another shot. The action is non-stop, the plot isn't bad at all, there's some great areas (the last base, which starts to collapse very convincingly around your ears, sticks in my mind), and you even get to crush your enemies with a tank!
But when I was playing it, the word "mod" wouldn't stop playing through my mind. I read a review a while ago on this that I couldn't help but agree with: - the best way this could have been promoted is as a nice little addition with the next Sierra release.

Great 5 July 2002

I don't know why so many people slate this game as it's simply great. Those who are comparing it to Half-Life have to remember that the original game in a genre always has the benefit of being THE original, and subsequent games have to measure up or surpass it. Gunman Chronicles may seem to be more of the same in comparison, just with a different story - so crazy, I love it: In deep space, a vengeful General Custer lookalike has genetically modified dinosaurs on an Alien World and decides to feed you to them, as he's seriously got it in for you. When that fails he dumps you on another planet, where a female computer takes over his hate campaign. Anyone complaining that this game may be too short should ask wether that the reason for such is because it's so playable, and anyone complaining about the graphics must be running it in software mode as they are fine on my none-too-modern Open GL Graphics Card.

The half life similarity was what persuaded me to buy this game, and it turned out to be amazing. So many weapons, 4 worlds. This is a 5 star game, no doubt about it. The second best game you'll ever buy. (next to half life, of course.) If your after a quick andreneline fueled boost, forget drugs, try GUNMAN! Another fine game from sierra. And at £8.99, theres no reason not to. I cannot persuade you enough to buy this game. Beleive me, you wont regret it.
