Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Crash Bandicoot was one of the original PlayStation's first--and indeed only--mascots, and though he was never quite as important to Sony as Mario and Sonic have been to Nintendo and Sega, he nevertheless provided PlayStation gamers with some quality platforming fun, as well as a couple of spin-off titles shamelessly "influenced" by Mario spin-offs. Now the lanky orange marsupial's made his way onto Game Boy Advance in an adventure that's suspiciously similar to Crash 3 and in many ways is superior to his recent PlayStation 2 appearance.

The gameplay's classic Crash, mainly involving running, jumping and spinning through 2-D platform levels, with the odd bit of scuba-diving and jetpacking thrown in and occasional towards-the-screen bear-avoiding escapades. There are four lots of five levels; in order to face each section's boss and collect a swanky power-up you'll only need to get to the end of each level and collect a pink crystal, but to finish the game completely each level must be completed at least twice, once with all the boxes being collected and once beating a pre-set speed. There are also hidden bits of certain levels that can only be unlocked by collecting coloured gems hidden in other levels.

As ever, there's no shortage of extra lives to pick up, and there are mid-level checkpoints and protective voodoo masks to collect, all of which prevent too much repetition, and you can save onto the cartridge after every level. The graphics and sound are great--Crash fans will be surprised at how smooth the transition from home console to handheld has been--and the gameplay is as polished and addictive as ever. All this adds up to another worthy hit for Crash; the GBA is a perfect new home for him. --Rikki Price

Product Description

Crash Bandicoot XS will mark the first time Crash has ever been on a handheld game system. It contains 20 levels featuring six unique locations that take Crash from the Mayan jungle to frigid arctic caverns, and gameplay modes include side-scrolling, 3-D chase levels, and aerial dogfight combat sequences. Crash is once again pitted against his arch-nemesis, the evil Dr Neo Cortex. Orbiting high above Earth, Cortex has decided to abandon his fixation on our hero and redirect his evil focus to world domination. Using his latest invention, a massive shrinking ray, Cortex takes aim and fires at Earth, shrinking the planet to the size of a grapefruit. Luckily, Crash's brilliant kid sister, Coco, is feverishly working on a machine to reverse the effects, but she needs crystals from around the world to power her invention. It's up to Crash to retrieve the crystals and help return the entire planet to its natural state.

4.0 out of 5 stars Addictive, 6 May 2002
By
Ben Williams (St.Albans England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Crash Bandicoot XS (GBA) (Video Game)
When you first start playing this game, you notice good smooth graphics with well crafted levels and good gameplay. There are variety of enemies each of which have to be killed in a different way. At first levels seem quite hard but it doesn't take long before you're doing them with perfection. However this leads to its only downside. The game is a little short. I don't play on my gameboy much yet I still managed to complete 30% in one weekend and a bank holiday.
But that weekend was full of fun. The game is just generally fun to play and it has an addiction in which you find yourself reaching for your gameboy at all times during the day. The biggest plus side is that you can't reaaly get annoyed much even if you find yourself falling of a cliff in a rather surprising death. Overall its good fun but could do with more than 20 levels and 4 bosses. If you persevere with braking every crate in the game it would be quite worthwhile but these things do get slightly boring.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best! Buy it!, 9 May 2004
This review is from: Crash Bandicoot XS (GBA) (Video Game)
This game is one of the best GBA games I have ever played!
There's just so much action it's hard to take in!
The levals are not to easy and not to hard, just perfect!
I recently played Crash on my Playstation and then when I found out that I could also play crash on my Gameboy, I was over the moon! I had previously thought that this version of crash wouldn't match up to the playstation version but I was so surprised!
All I can really say is GO OUT AND BUY THIS GAME!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars A lot of challenge for your money, 6 April 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Crash Bandicoot XS (GBA) (Video Game)
When it comes to platform games, this one has taken into account a lot of elements that build a challenging piece of entertainment. I have now owned this nifty little platformer for a few months and have found it to be as challenging, if not even more challenging than the playstation versions. It does not emulate the quality of graphics, obviously, but a lot of the original magic has been preserved that made the original games so good. The sound is obviously also degraded, but recognisable non the less. Another thing that makes this game so good is it contains a story line which most handheld games don't pay as much attention to. You'll notice that developers when developing a handheld game, go for something quick and addictive that'll last a few weeks at the most, however a lot of thought has been put into this game, it's challenges are difficult and its gameplay is chunky. Overall you won't be dissapointed on spending money for this game, and will it will be amongst the current greats such as Sonic Advance and the Super Mario games. If there's a game you're gonna buy this month, make it this one!
