Product Description

Product Description
This first volume addresses a wide range of issues. The essays contain discussions of the politics and the economics of the cities during the 14th century; the major practitioners of painting, sculpture and architecture; the significance of communal and familial patronage of art in the three cities; the relation of art to the religious belief and devotional practice and to the broader intellectual ambience of the cities; and the impact and significance of various historiographical traditions.

5.0 out of 5 stars More than a selection of essays: compelling reading, 18 Oct 2006

(REAL NAME)
I read this and the volume 2 as part of an OU course. The course is typically described by OU art history students as "Best course ever!" and I fully agree. What's more it's because of these books which offer a superb insight into Italian city states and the use of art to reinforce the iconography of the cities' ruling families.

Read this and its companion and then book your next summer vacation in Italy visiting the art you have read about and I guarantee it'll be one of your most entertaining visits to Italy.
