I bought a gigaset a585 duo phone set in March 2010. Not very happy with the 58 page instruction booklet. I had to do a manual registration of the handsets (as it wouldn't do the automatic version). This was hard work, especially late in the evening (I had already disconnected my old phone so I had no choice to perservere). The following day I spent over an hour loading in regular phone numbers into the memory. I ran out of time so I continued the exercise 2 days later. I then discovered that this 2nd exercise had 'wiped' all the original ones. I find the handset not very user friendly. When you press the green button to get a 'phone line, you have to be really careful otherwise it automatically re-dials the last number you rang. The red button (to make sure you've got a clear line) is also temperamental.
Now, after just 5 mths of use, it is playing up. The battery low button comes on & then the next time I look the battery shows as fully charged. Then I get a problem where any phone conversation of more than a minute 'just dies' as if the battery has run out. The phone won't go back onto its cradle properly & just flashes 'base'. I now can't even get a dialling tone to make a call.
I've phoned the call centre for help. They've e mailed a list of instructions to me basically telling me that I've got to unplug & re-register the handsets. This will delete the entire contents of the memory. I am not pleased .................
I would not recommend this item & would quite happily put it in the bin.

I installed the triple pack this morning - I had no problems with -
- Installing (automatic registration worked fine for me)
- Setting Date / Time
- Setting up the ring tone / volumes
- Customising the answerphone
- Reseting the pin for remote answerphone access
I agree that the phones have a bit of an old fashioned clunky feel but I think they are still pretty good value -
- Good sound quality
- Nice key pad / touch (better than my old BT)
- Solid build quality
Yes - the instruction book is 54 pages but there is a lot of functionality to describe. There is also a quick find index at the back which allows you to got straight to the section you want (you dont get this with the equivalent Panasonic phones).
Finally - shop around - I got the triple pack for my less than the twin pack on here :-)
I will update this review after, say, 3 months use.

we bought this telephone after reading that it had the highest rating in Which but believe me it has so many things which make this item difficult. The answer phone is not clear, no audible message waiting, easy to accidently dial last number. I should have bought another Panasonic as the last one was far better than this and we are going to give it away. The recorded message is not a good clear sound and the ring tones are not a very good choice.Siemens Gigaset A585
