Product Description

Siege of Titan is the first book in the epic science fiction series that chronicles humanity's first interstellar confederation that is torn apart by religious strife and extremism.

In the first book of the Star Crusades Uprising series, the bloody struggle is told through the eyes of an illegal pit fighter named Spartan, who is forced to choose between incarceration or military service.  Choosing the Confederate Marine Corps over servitude he begins his thirty long weeks of training.  Together with his group of marines, they are honed into a force ready to be thrown into the meat grinder on the newest and greatest planet in the Confederacy, Proxima Prime. His term of service will soon become one of violence and carnage, as the entire sector is ripped apart by a brutal and virulent religious movement and its shocking plans.

What starts as a series of suicide bombings and hijackings through the Confederacy quickly turns into a full-scale revolution on Prime that threatens the entire planet and quickly spreads to its orbital Naval Station and beyond. As every warship and military transport in the area is rushed to its defence, the fate of the planet and the entire sector lie in the hands of a small number of rookie marines.

Siege of Titan is a classic work of realistic military science fiction set against the background of the first interstellar human empire.

The Star Crusades series currently includes the original Star Crusades Uprising and brand new Star Crusades Nexus series that follows the story of the Centauri Alliance seventeen years after the end of the Uprising. Novels currently available in the series include:

Excerpt from first chapter

Spartan was hurt, really hurt. He hadn't felt this much pain in years and even then he hadn't been in danger of dying in such a degrading manner. As he lay on the ground, he could feel the dull ache across his shoulder and chest from the impact and it took him superhuman effort to stay conscious. The arena floor burned his feet and as the pain kicked in his vision started to blur. He lifted his left arm and as soon as he moved the muscle he could feel the sharp pain in his ribs, it was like a knife being thrust deep into his flesh. He forced himself passed the pain and wiped his brow, making him concentrate on the fight he faced. At the very least he had broken ribs and as for his shoulder, he had no idea. Anyway, it didn't really matter as he was about to suffer far worse if he didn't move. He struck his hand against his chest, hitting the valve that released a dose of drugs into his bloodstream that instantly numbed the pain in his body. In licensed matches these kinds of drugs were never needed but this kind of fight could lead to death, and in these circumstances he was more than happy to put something into his blood to give him a fighting chance.
Forcing his eyes open, he saw the dull metal mace heading for his head. With every ounce of energy he had left, he rolled to the right. The weapon smashed down into the ground, missing his body by inches. He kept rolling and then forced himself up into a sitting position.
"Now I'm pissed!" he swore to himself.
He dragged himself off the floor and up to face his opponent.
Maximilian was his name, or at least, that was his fighting name. The man was massive, an image of a Greek god that stood a good six and a half feet tall. His torso was puffed out with thick muscles and blood dripped from a gash across his stomach. Of all the opponents Spartan had faced, this one had caused him the most trouble. In fifteen minutes of gut wrenching combat they had both broken bones and cut flesh, yet both were still fighting.

Gears of War, Space Marines and Starship Troopers thrown together into the ultimate homage to '80s sci-fi action movies. The ground combat feels like WWI and the ship battles are very similar to Napoleonic sea combat. The attention to detail on the hand to hand combat and bayonet technique really is something else and shows the authors true understanding of the subject. There were a couple of typos but nothing major and it didn't detract from the story. Also, I thought Spartan could have used a little more character development.

Let me just say, Sci-Fi is not my usual genre so I downloaded the sample chapters with trepidation after I noticed the book pop up on my recommendations page. It's not that I don't like the genre but more the fact that most sci-fi books I try border a bit too much on the unrealistic. But not this one.
The first few pages of a Siege of Titan sucked me right in and I was hooked so I bought the whole thing. What makes this book stand out from the crowd is the author's amazing imagination that doesn't cross the line between believable and fantastical. The writing conveyed a sense of reality and urgency, and kept me on the edge of my seat. I found the main character, Spartan, engaging and interesting. What I also enjoyed was the excellent world building. The Confederate Marine Corps were so well described at times I felt like I was watching a movie running before my eyes. I'm going to pick up the next book in the series to see how Spartan's story progresses.
If you're looking for fast paced action non-stop, look no further because you've found it. A really good book I can only recommend.

Siege of Titan is a good entertaining read with plenty of action and nice atmosphere.

An engaging story, with applicability to some our own world's ongoing issues, sets the scene for what is sure to be an epic saga of war and chaos against the backdrop of interstellar religious extremism.
A good mix of straightforward narrative description and character point of view offers a level of immersion which successfully drags the reader in. Excellent pacing, frenetic action and visceral cinematic descriptions meant I found myself ducking when the zealots opened fire and wincing as blades were drawn!

The characters, while appealing, don't quite come alive as much as they could. They suffer slightly from being among so many things that are introduced to the reader. This is, however, understandable, as they can only be fleshed out so much in a book which is setting the scene of an entire world. Too much more would have slowed the pacing so it's not a big deal at this early stage.

There is something for everyone here. Historians, hoplophiles and technophiles will love the detail and thought that Thomas has put into creating his world but it's certainly not too much detail for the regular reader to digest.

As the story progresses, foreshadowing of things to come will become more apparent and will leave the reader chomping at the bit for the next installment.

All in all, an enjoyable book with great potential as the starting point of a much bigger picture!

Detailed science fiction with realistic action and a tight storyline
This is a well written, albeit it not particularly original space opera. Spartan is well described with some very violent but seemingly realistic action sequences. Read more
