Matt Kirk (Aldo Ray) is in jail, wrongly accused of a crime, and along with three other inmates he escapes by hiding out in an ambulance. Circumstances then lead Matt and the others to set off in a small boat that ends up drifting toward an island called Pinchgut in Sydney's harbor. As the fugitives hole up on the island, Matt devises a way to call attention to his demand for a retrial that instead calls attention to more police... and a siege of the island begins. Being a big fan of the tough, muscular Aldo Ray, i was overjoyed to hear this little-seen 1959 classic was to be released by Optimum. The much underrated Ray is on top form here as a prison escapee whom, with three accomplices, becomes trapped on Pinchgut Island. In order to secure his demands, Ray threatens to blow up Sydney harbor, if those demands are not met, thus leading to an action-packed finale with the authorities. Based on a true story, this film really packs a wallop, and fans of classic films should derive much enjoyment. With a good cast, which includes, Heather Sears, Victor Maddern, Neil McCallum and Barbara Mullen, the Siege was a worthy film for Ealing to end film production with.

Siege Of Pinchgut [DVD] [1960]

I am amazed how well this film stands up after 50 years. It is a well made movie and shows Sydney as it was - before the Opera House days when Benelong Point housed the old castle-like tram depot (the depot was pulled down for the construction of the Sydney Opera House and trams were taken off the streets and replaced by buses).

As our children never knew my mother it is wonderful for them to be able to see her on screen as the generous tourist who visits the island in the middle of our lovely Sydney Harbour - Fort Denison (known as Pinchgut to the early convicts who were housed there). She is the tourist who tips one of the four men who has taken over the island and taken the caretaker and his family hostage, in order to negotiate their escape with the police. It is just a shame that, as there was so much background noise at the time of filming, her voice was overdubbed by another Austalian actress in the Ealing Studios in London, and we don't actually hear her speaking.

Thank you Amazon UK for having this available at a truly affordable price - it brings back many memories, not only of my mother but also of Sydney in the 1960s.

I'd been waiting for the DVD release of the restored print of "The Siege of Pinchgut" for a long time, so no surprise I ordered it within a week of release last month. And wow, the quality of the restoration is awesome!

Sadly, the movie itself didn't live up to my long-held expectations, but the scenes of Sydney and the harbour - and the cars, coppers and buses - are worth the cost of the DVD a couple of times over. The probem is the script which for the most part is pretty ordinary, and that's being polite.

On the plus side, the photography is wonderful and the acting by the supporting cast solid. Aldo Ray is menacing and believable in the lead role but the best performance comes from Gerry Duggan as "Pat".

Recommended for those with an interest in Sydney of the late 1950s period and Ealing completists, this being the studio's final production.
