Sideways is a two-disc set containing the "Sideways" album and an interview disc with John Foxx, talking about the ideas behind the "From Trash" album. The songs on "Sideways" came out of the "From Trash" recording sessions, however in style, these tracks are very different and bear a strong resemblance to Foxx's earlier work such as" Systems of Romance" and his solo debut, "Metamatic".

These heavily electronic, riff-based tracks go together very well with their science-fiction b-movie influence.

"In A Silent Way" and "X-Ray Vision" could easily have come straight from "Systems of Romance" - which will undoubtedly please the more mature Foxx fan. "Car Crash Flashback v2" and "Neuro Video" are two of the most unusual and strongest tracks on the album, with riffs, loops and treated vocals.

"Sideways" is a shorter and more simple affair than "From Trash". It certainly sounds "less commercial", although the two albums are so differemt, it's hard to compare them, and it's hard to believe all these tracks came out of the same sessions.

Foxx talks openly about each track from "From Trash" on the interview CD - such interviews have been something of a rarity in previous years, so to get an insight into the ideas the songs, remains fascinating to the hardcore fan.

Well worth checking out.

If you like the quiet man's earlier work than this is clearly an album you should be buying. Like the previous reviewer it reminds me of Systems of Romance and Metamatic utilising some dark lyrics and even darker synth lines, one of my favourite albums at the moment and played regularly. Can't wait to see him perform Metamatic in Birmingham. 5 star performance and production.

After the consistent build-up of the previous few albums, it was probably inevitable that a change in direction would disappoint. "Sideways" is a lot more measured than "Crash & Burn" or "From Trash" and doesn't have any of the high-points of those albums. I find it less interesting, probably because the songs are slower and perhaps a little more minimal. Its a great album for a relaxing Sunday morning but not the kind of thing I'd want to hear at a club on Saturday night.
There are a few good songs here but numbers like "Car Crash Flashback" and "Neuro Video" are a little too one-dimensional for my tastes. John Foxx's vocals show some progression, but remain clearly his own. The production is also good and the progression of the songs on the album make for a cohesive whole. If you already have "Crash & Burn" and "From Trash", you've got the best stuff but this is still worth having to complete your collection.

As much as I welcomed the return of John Foxx, I always felt that something was missing slightly. Ok, without record company backing perhaps the releases would be a less well marketed, but they should never feel sonically lacking. Up until this album John Foxx and Louis Gordon felt a little thin and a little "digital".

This album changed all that. The sounds were fatter, the production warmer and the compositions far less "uptight".

I love Mr Foxx for his uniqueness, but... 25 Jun. 2007

I have been trying to catch up with the latest releases from John Foxx that I haven't picked up since the release of The Golden Section on vynil from back in the day. You know I expected more than what I got.

The only tracks that grab my attention fully are Xray Vision and Use My Voice, otherwise it was rather uneventful to my ears.

The main reason I gave it 3 stars than 2 was the full CD that is an interview with Mr Foxx. I love to listen to him explain in very sober terms about his influence and execution of his art. Otherwise one can get lost in his imagery lyrics and way-out there definitions of the world around him, both in song and on the album cover (strange verbosity to say the least).

I look forward to trying out his other offerings as soon as my paycheck allows.
