Sideways is a two-disc set containing the "Sideways" album and an interview disc with John Foxx, talking about the ideas behind the "From Trash" album. The songs on "Sideways" came out of the "From Trash" recording sessions, however in style, these tracks are very different and bear a strong resemblance to Foxx's earlier work such as" Systems of Romance" and his solo debut, "Metamatic".
These heavily electronic, riff-based tracks go together very well with their science-fiction b-movie influence.
"In A Silent Way" and "X-Ray Vision" could easily have come straight from "Systems of Romance" - which will undoubtedly please the more mature Foxx fan. "Car Crash Flashback v2" and "Neuro Video" are two of the most unusual and strongest tracks on the album, with riffs, loops and treated vocals.
"Sideways" is a shorter and more simple affair than "From Trash". It certainly sounds "less commercial", although the two albums are so differemt, it's hard to compare them, and it's hard to believe all these tracks came out of the same sessions.
Foxx talks openly about each track from "From Trash" on the interview CD - such interviews have been something of a rarity in previous years, so to get an insight into the ideas the songs, remains fascinating to the hardcore fan.
Well worth checking out.
