Review

'At long last, a book not by some New Age nutter, but by an eminent doctor on the massive challanges our society faces in "healing the illnesses doctors cannot cure". A book that should be prescribed to all medics.' (INDEPENDENT (8/9/06) )

Product Description

SICK AND TIRED investigates the paradox that while people in the developed world are living longer, millions of people suffer from new illnesses that modern medicine has no answer for e.g. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Half the visits to NHS doctors in the UK involved patients with such problems. Nick Read reveals what is going on; why the stresses and strains of modern life are often the trigger for an astonishing range of symptoms; and why the NHS and other medical systems are so bad at dealing with them. He contends that this is not the first time in history that social, economic and family pressures have led to new forms of sickness. And he explains how modern clinical practice that has so sharply reduced the number of people dying of heart disease (for example) is often slow to detect psychosomatic problems, and usually clumsy at dealing with them. Dr Read cites numerous case studies and patients' stories to show how the disintegration of family units, job pressures and the sheer pace of modern life can trigger debilitating physical symptoms. SICK AND TIRED reveals the extraordinary extent to which your mind can affect your body. It is not a call for us all to seek therapy, but a considered study into the impact of our lifestyles on our health. If you don't have such symptoms yourself, you probably have family or friends who do: Dr Read explains that the way to better health is to tackle the stress, not just the symptoms.

5.0 out of 5 stars A compelling read, 5 Jan 2006
The essence of this book is in the subtitle of "Healing the illnesses that doctors cannot cure", to which the author might have added "and often don't even recognise". In consequence the sufferer is left bereft of orthodox medical help and, as Read shows, the numbers of such patients are increasing rapidly. This book explores how this increase is related to changes in society and it examines the interactions between society, health and the rhythms of life.
Inevitably Read concentrates on disorders of the bowels and stomach as these are his own areas of particular interest and expertise, but those who suffer from other poorly recognised conditions will find much that they have in common with the case histories described in this book and will, hopefully, recognise that there is hope after all.
The scientific purist may complain that there is much that is speculative in this book. But that would be to miss the point which is that, at present, the scientific rationale for many of these illnesses is still not adequately understood. That, of course, does not make the sufferers' symptoms any less real.
A little effort is required to grasp some of the concepts which are described, but the book is well written and the effort will be rewarding for both patients and their doctors.

Nick Read writes a book that should and does make you consider the place of western medicine in treating conditions that have been around for centuries.

Considering how many patients are treated by doctors in the modern day i.e. take a tablet rather than question why the patient is sufering from the problems they are.

If your doing a course in alternative medicine or questioning why western medicine fails consider this book.
