For a two-week holiday with a hire car in Sicily, based out of Taormina, I ordered this and the Michelin and both brought something to the party - it would have been difficult to manage as well as we did without having both of them. This is because both had significant gaps.

The Marco Polo was much more up to date. As Sicily is undergoing a massive investment in its road infrastructure this is fairly critical - there were roads here that simply weren't on the Michelin, but drivers and navigators should note that even this will be out of date very soon as roads are either being upgraded to higher status roads (e.g. single to dual carriageway) or being replaced entirely with autostrada and by-passes.

The Marco Polo also has a booklet of town maps, which is great.

The Marco Polo is aimed at tourists, and has a rating system for towns, based on whether they are worth a trip, a detour or are fairly worth stopping off at. It's not a bad system, but we found that its single star ratings were usually specific to a very small number of buildings and were rarely worth the chaos of the traffic and the struggle to find somewhere to park. Some of the roads are marked in green, to indicate attractive routes, which is helpful.

The major downside of the Marco Polo is that the autostrada (motorway) junctions are very poorly depicted, making it very difficult to work out what was going on at any given entry or exit point - or even if there is a junction at all. The Michelin was infinitely better at this.

Another downside is that the size of towns is indicated by the size of the lettering - big towns like Catania are given huge capitalized fonts, little villages are given tiny regular fonts.

I got several maps of Sicily+large Michelin Italy atlas. But this is the best map. Best detail. So if you are going to buy only one map this is the best - obvious - choice in my opinion (I've done 1.5K km in 11 days). In Sicily forget (most of the time) about road numbers - go for directions (cities, places); they dominate the road signs. Otherwise driving in Sicily is really no so bad and quite pleasant (excluding Palermo - special case), and Italians (beside all problems they create for themselves and others) are very good drivers .

We bought this map as it was the latest and seemed a decent scale. I agree with an earlier review regarding the scale necessary for accurate navigation. We did get spectacularly lost on occasion because you do need more local detail. I did discover the equivalent to our OS maps in a good bookshop in Modica, covering the area we were in, and that was a great improvement. Next time we go, if I cannot find the relevant map online, I will head for the nearest decent bookshop and buy a local version. It will be well worth the investment, saving in time, petrol and lost tempers!

It wasn't great - gave an idea of the type of toads and where they run, but was very difficult to navigate within towns, as well as exits in different directions. Add to this that signage in Sicily often tell you the same town is both left and right, with no indication of the street you are on and the easiest way to get there - it is chaos. But thats not all the maps fault, can't blame it for everything - but I don't think it is the best map ever.

Enjoyed using this on holiday in Sicily while travelling down from Rome by train and then across from Siracuse to Palermo.

We used this throughout our 2 week stay in Sicily, mainly for driving but also for some walking, and it proved to be more than adequate. It was the best map of Sicily we could find, either in the UK or in Sicily, and showed all the detail we needed. In several places it showed the right route when my TOM TOM had sent me down the wrong one.

As a basic navigational aid for general travel, this map is quite adequate and we used it on our travels in Sicily for inter location movement. Having said that - without the Tom-Tom we would have been hopelessly lost most of the time !
It is a well priced product - and one I would be happy to recommend - but get a sat-nav as well !!!
