Book Description

Ann Radcliffe grew in the space of eight years from an unknown author publishing her first novel anonymously, to becoming universally acknowledged as the leading exponent of the Gothic novel.

Her rise was meteoric, her fame and readership immense. Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832), described her as "the first poetess of romantic fiction", a "mighty magician", and "the Great Enchantress".

Radcliffe transformed the Gothic novel from a mere vehicle for the depiction of terror into a subtle and insightful instrument capable of exploring the psychology of fear and suspense. Her emphasis on emotion, perception, and the relationship between atmosphere and sensibility proved a significant and lasting contribution to the Gothic and Romanticism in fiction, and to the development of the modern novel as a whole.

She made a huge impact on contemporary writers, including a large number of authors who imitated and/or revised Radcliffe's work, the most significant being: Isaac Crookenden, Catherine Cuthbertson, Mary Meeke, Mary Ann Radcliffe (!), Regina Maria Roche and Eleanor Sleath.

Furthermore, the appreciation of Radcliffe's style and of her mastery of the craft has resulted in her lasting influence being acknowledged by a succession of notable authors such as Sir Walter Scott, Victor Hugo, the Marquis de Sade, Alexandre Dumas, Jane Austen, Mary Shelley, Edgar Allan Poe and H.P. Lovecraft.

A Sicilian Romance (1799) was Radcliffe's second book and her first real success. Sir Walter Scott wrote that this novel "attracted in no ordinary degree the attention of the public... far excelling the ordinary meagreness" of contemporary fiction. A Sicilian Romance strikes a very enjoyable balance, combining a storyline full of drama and suspense along with the beautiful, enchanting prose that characterises her later work. This, along with her next novel, The Romance of the Forest, are perhaps her most enjoyable and accessible works, full of the freshness of youth.

A Gothic novel that has proven to stand the test of time!

Beautifully re-mastered to insure a more contemporary writing style ‘A Sicilian Romance’ by author Ann Radcliff is truly an amazing piece of literature that I am truly honored to be able to provide a review for. Sir Walter Scott provided a review on this book hit it on the head when he said that Ann Radcliffe is “the Great Enchantress.

In short, I felt this was a phenomenal book that I was not prepared for. Everything from the Romance, to the dashing storyline and plot theme will sweep you away into the late midnight hours. This story is captivating and in many ways provides a sense of nostalgia that takes you away to a time long passed. The book is edited to perfection and flow perfectly allowing for a much easier read that would normally be found in a classic gothic novels.

5 Stars for “A Sicilian Romance” it is definitely a masterpiece that has been revived and one that I encourage everyone to read. My next stop will be “The Romance of the Forest.”

5.0 out of 5 stars Gothic Greatness! 19 May 2014

I am so pleased that I stumbled across Mrs Radcliffe a little while ago - I just love her writing. I think she must be the Gothic novelist that I most enjoy reading - better I would say than Maturin and Lewis etc . A Sicilian Romance is a particularly fine book, a little shorter than her later books but no worse for it. I would recommend to anyone who may have been mildly annoyed by the grand somewhat verbose style of the Italian and Udolpho. Although those two works are no doubt Gothic masterpieces, they are a little trying at times. A Sicilian Romance is very refreshing and highly recommended!
5.0 out of 5 stars The refreshing Ms Radcliffe 19 May 2014

OK, Gothic fiction from the 18th century can be a bit of a stretch as a reading experience, however, I have found Ms Radcliffe to be really a very good read. There is something about her style that I find very attractive - I think I am going to go on and finish every novel now! I have come to A Sicilian Romance after reading a Romance of the Forest and I must say that I found these last two books - when compared to Udolpho - much lighter and more enjoyable. In particular, there is hardly any poetry throughout the work and the writing style is much more direct and punchy. Radcliffe really is on form for these books and I can definitely put them on my list of good reads
