Book Description

21 Nov 2000 Howell dummies series
Bred for loyalty, strength and endurance, the easy–going and sociable Siberian Husky is a very pure and ancient breed, dating back 4,000 years or more. First bred by the Chukchis, a semi–nomadic people of northeastern Siberia, to hunt reindeer and pull sleds, the Siberian is an active breed that loves the outdoors. Prized for their great beauty, intelligence, wonderful way with children and lack of “dog smell,” they are also more free–spirited (and free–ranging) than many other popular breeds, and have a reputation for stubbornness and relentlessness in pursuit of a goal. Is this breed right for you and your family? Siberian Huskies For Dummies answers this and all your questions about getting, caring for and living with a Husky. Siberian devotee—she has eight of her own—Diane Morgan gets you up and running with what you need to know to: Find and deal with reputable breeders Choose the right Husky for you Hou sebreak and socialize your new puppy Educate yourself and your dog Handle behavioral problems Participate in competitions In friendly, down–to–earth language, Diane provides insights into the Siberian Husky temperament and loads of sensible, easy–to–follow advice on everything a Husky owner should know—along with fun facts and Husky trivia, amusing and informative anecdotes, and tips on how to have a great time with your Husky. Topics covered include: Understanding what makes the Siberian different from every other breed Deciding whether a male or female is right for you Understanding how to communicate with your Siberian Husky Training your Siberian Husky Grooming your Siberian Finding and establishing a good relationship with a veterinarian Breaking bad habits in your Husky Feeding and exercising your Siberian Husky Recognizing, preventing and treating common health problems Getting your Husky into sledding The indispensable guide for you and your Siberian Husky, Siberian Huskies For Dummies is the only book you’ll need to help you have the best possible experience with this very ancient and venerable breed of dog.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book on Sibes I've read 23 July 2001
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
The 'for Dummies' series has always been excellent, and if you've ever read one before you'll know they're not an insult to your intelligence, just very clear and informative guides on their subject. This one is no exception.
Even though I have read many books on Sibes, this is the most thorough. It has everything you'd expect - breed history, medical information, hints on training, information on purchasing a puppy... the single thing it's missing is pictures. Sadly there are no pretty pictures of what is the world's most beautiful dog breed. Buy this book for information on Sibes, and think about getting a nice glossy paperback for visual stimulation.

4.0 out of 5 stars The basics and beyond 15 Dec 2006
Format:Paperback
As a novice to this beautiful and spirited breed, I found the information in this book invaluable. It helped me find a reputable breeder and armed me with the relevant knowledge to ensure I found the right dog for me.

Full of information on every detail, from bringing your puppy home, to dog first aid.

One draw back to this book is that it is aimed at the American audience, so some of the references are irrelevant in the UK. But a quick internet search soon found the British version of the club or website.

Overall for me it was an essential buy, enabling me to find my lovely Sibe.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wrong Side of the Atlantic 3 Dec 2010
Format:Paperback
The book is very interesting but it is written by an American for Americans not for the British.
Examples are types of dog food the author says are good for huskies tummies, these brands are not available over here.

Geography aside, the book offers some real insights into the Husky breed and in many ways helped prepare me for my new arrivals (2x 8 month old Siberians from a re homing centre). The book is definitely worth buying but probably not at the full new price due to parts of the book being worthless.

I have used some of the techniques described and they have worked, I have had the dogs 3 weeks now and I think it is probably worth reading it again now I know their foibles (although there is an index if there is something specific to check up on).

If you are new to Siberians or are considering getting them for the fist time please do your research (buy this book or one of the many others available) Sibes are wonderful dogs that are truly unique and very beautiful but there is a price to pay, make sure you know that before leaping in and getting them, they deserve for everything to be right before they arrive). When the book and all of the websites say they need MINIMUM 2 hours exercise a day it means they need MINIMUM 2 hours exercise a day, less than that and they will rip your house down the minute your back is turned, it is not their fault for this is what they need and it is well documented (in this book). They really can climb fences, jump over six foot and dig like a JCB, again pay attention as they WILL escape (mine did on day 1).
