CD of the Week --Classic fm,28/03/11

Most impressive is his generous, intelligent shaping of the work, whose climatic coalescings he relishes for their own sake, rather than to self-glorify. **** --Sunday Times,10/04/11

Inkenen's Sibelius cycle continues with a Second that bears up well. The orchestra certainly sound as if they enjoyed themselves and so should you in their company. --Gramophone,June'11

High playing standards,a firm grasp of the music's architecture and emotional content and at budget price. **** --Classic fm Magazine,July'11

I wanted very much to like this performance but I find I can't. The first problem is the sound quality, it is mid to base heavy though I suspect there is nothing below 100 herz either - its almost muddy in parts. The second problem is not that the orchestra doesn't play superbly, as far I can tell they do, but the conducting is heavy handed and whilst this muscular approach is not uncommon for Sibelius Symphony No 2 it doesn't work with the recording quality. The recording sent me to my library where I find I have at least 2 other versions. One OK the other a first choice. The OK is Charles Mackerras and the RPO, another heavy handed full frequency type of performance but decently recorded so that it puts the Naxos disc to shame in this respect. However I don't like Mackerras overly much, he is a bit slow and inclined to make a Mahler 2 like performance when perhaps that is not quite the usual way this is played. In the end I choose Berglund....currently available with the other 3 early symphonies, you may find however that Berglunds lightness of touch is too much so but any other way seems to be hard to endure for more than a one off...

One wonders exactly what happened to the sound, it can't be the Hall acoustic alone??? Oh well so many splendid things from Naxos there have to be near misses and this is one of them...

4.0 out of 5 stars A good newer recording of the work 18 Mar 2013
By John J. Puccio - Published on Amazon.com
I wouldn't abandon older recordings by Sir John Barbirolli, Sir Colin Davis, Herbert von Karajan, George Szell, Osmo Vanska, Pierre Monteux, and others for Inkinen's newer one, but Inkinen at least makes a decent case for the work.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sweeping and Romantic Rendering of Sibelius' Best 1 Jun 2011
By AB - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
The Sibelius Symphony #2 opens with a beautiful and melodic woodwind passage, and the entire symphony continues in that pleasant vein. As the short liner notes state, the symphony is meant to bring to mind the land of Finland, and it easily succeeds. The middle two movements are bit too "romantic" for my taste, but the final movement, with the bass background driving the glorious theme, is fantastic. The Karelia suite also put on this CD is quite light and fun. It sounds like sleigh bells ringing along on a winter voyage through the woods.
