The Penguin Guide gave Jansons' Sibelius 1st. a three-star asterisked review, so I went for this set at its very cheap price when I wanted a new 'take' on Sibelius. The CDs don't disappoint. There's nothing eccentric here - he follows the scores faithfully, the orchestra plays excellently, the recording's good. He has a fine command of structure, but the colour and originality of the scores comes out well too. In the end of the day, I think I prefer Colin Davis in his recent LSO readings marginally - I find him just as effective as Janssons in every way with, I think, a tiny extra edge of power and atmosphere - but they complement each other well, and the best thing is to have both, if you can.
