By Mr. Ian A. Macfarlane TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
The Penguin Guide gave Jansons' Sibelius 1st. a three-star asterisked review, so I went for this set at its very cheap price when I wanted a new 'take' on Sibelius. The CDs don't disappoint. There's nothing eccentric here - he follows the scores faithfully, the orchestra plays excellently, the recording's good. He has a fine command of structure, but the colour and originality of the scores comes out well too. In the end of the day, I think I prefer Colin Davis in his recent LSO readings marginally - I find him just as effective as Janssons in every way with, I think, a tiny extra edge of power and atmosphere - but they complement each other well, and the best thing is to have both, if you can.

The relationship between Mariss Jansons and the Concertgebouw is one of the most exciting and satisfying collaborations to be heard either on disc or in the concert hall, and in Sibelius the great Dutch orchestra adds its characteristic warmth of string sound to Jansons' brilliantly forensic control of texture. Blazing wind and brass in Finlandia and the Symphonies contrast with the extreme delicacy and wistfulness of the string playing in Valse Triste - one of Jansons' favourite encores.

Weedy String Tone 14 Aug 2010
Format:Audio CD
Although the playing so far (I've only listened to Symphony Number 1) is satisfactorily gestural, the string tone is narrow - lackling the amplitude needed in this piece in particular.
I'm rather disappointed.
