Paavo Berglund was a shot in the arm for the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, and he moulded their sound in a way few other conductors have stuck around long enough to manage.

Despite having slimmer numbers than flashier translatlantic or European bands,with the BSO Berglund developed a heavy-toned string sound eminently suited to Sibelius and Shostakovich and he recorded pieces by both composers with the orchestra.

Similarly, Brass and Woodwind were fashioned into a superbly cohesive unit, solid and powerful.

The complete Sibelius symphonies were recorded by the BSO in the 1970s mostly at the Winter Gardens in Bournemouth and the Guildhall Southampton and the project produced one of the most cogent accounts of these works. The highpoints for me include the first movement of the third symphony- nobody else has manbaged to get those staccato woodwind pohrases over the sustained string writing in such a thrilling manner; The Fifth Symphony, where the closing chords project a bleak finality which leaves you truly 'out in the cold'; The Seventh Synmphony, an account which makes this piece unfold in such an inevitable organic fashion- no-one has come close to this interpretation.

Snap up this box set wherever you can find it. This is an astounding bargain.

If you can pick this box-set up, i would advise you to do so. When originally released these recordings were highly recommended. In my estimation these still need some beating with superlative playing by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. The 2nd Symphony is probably the highlight of the cycle and is definitive amounst the very best. Check these out if you can. Currently out of print, so try second hand.
