Product Description

CD Description

· Kippington Lodge released five excellent singles on Parlophone Records between 1967 and 1969, yet they remain one of the least known English pop groups of the late sixties.

· This despite boasting a line-up that included Nick Lowe as well as Brinsley Schwarz and Bob Andrews (future members of Graham Parker & The Rumour) who would all find fame - and in Lowe's case, fortune - for their musical exploits in the decades to follow.

· Kippington Lodge have been afforded so little recognition that - with the exception of having their singles crudely tacked on to a Brinsley Schwarz compilation CD in 1998 - their output has never been presented and evaluated in the proper context.

· The group - whose first two singles were produced by famed EMI producer Mark Wirtz , including their contemporary version of the Keith West penned Shy Boy, today a regular on 60's radio programmes - was a true creature of the sixties.

· With Shy Boy: The Complete Kippington Lodge 1967-1969 their entire recorded output, along with an unreleased studio track from 1967 and alternate takes from the Abbey Road archives, and a BBC session, have been collected together for the first time ever to tell the tale of a sturdy little group that was so much more than just a launch pad for the subsequent careers of Lowe, Schwarz and Andrews.

Product Description

New 2011 remastered anthology from UK pop group featuring Nick Lowe & Brinsley Schwarz! Includes their 5 singles & b-sides + 5 bonus tracks including BBC sessions, alternate takes & a previously unreleased track.

At last! RPM have treated Kippington Lodge's all too small recorded output with the respect it deserves. The bulk of these songs have been available on CD before, but in inferior sound quality. This time round, the songs have been lovingly mastered and sound all the better for it. In particular, the group's BBC recordings of Shy Boy and Younger Girl -- the earliest recordings to feature Nick Lowe on bass -- are a revelation. RPM have also unearthed a couple of outtakes including two versions of Land of Sea, a tongue-in-cheek, psychedelic confection that captures the lazy, lysergic feel of the period perfectly. Also included is an alternative version of And She Cried.

Kippinton Lodge always wanted to be a `top end' pop group like the Move and the Herd. (It would be another 10 years before Nick Lowe, Brinsley Schwarz and Bob Andrews hit their commercial pop peak.) Although they were never going to rival the Move, the Mark Wirtz productions are near perfect pop gems. Along with the other singles included on this compilation they reveal what a fine pop band Kippington Lodge was.

If you have anything more than a passing interest in 60s pop music; Kippington Lodge: Shy Boy will have you returning again and again to groove, gently, to some quality period pop that has stood up well to the passing of time and styles. All that remains is to dig out the frilly shirt, warm up the larva lamp and turn up the hi-fi.

...who states that the only Kippington Lodge tracks available until now were, "...(some of) their singles crudely tacked on to a Brinsley Schwarz compilation CD in 1998". The compilation in question, Hens Teeth, was actually a wonderful addition to the Brinsley's catalog, 22 chronological tracks of non-album singles and B-sides, some under aliases, that led off with 10 tracks by Kippington Lodge. Leading off a chronologically compiled compilation is far from being "tacked on"! Released by Edsel Records, a well known and respected reissue label, the sound quality was also quite good, and the enclosed nice fold-out poster's liner notes mentioned that original tapes were used unless unavailable, then the best quality copies of the records were utilized. "HEN'S TEETH" was a welcomed addition to the Brinsley Schwarz canon and sold out. Current prices, if copies can be found, show that the compilers were prophetic when bestowing it's title! Maybe the amazon Reviewer is just bitter because he couldn't find or afford a copy of this great disc. If you ever find one, grab it quick, you won't be disappointed......

ADDITIONAL INFO (Added Sept. 2, 2011): I finally received my copy of this today, and found that the remarks I refer to in my original review were NOT written by an Amazon reviewer, but the person who writes the liner notes in the booklet, a Stefan Granados. I still find the statement that the Kippington Lodge tracks were "tacked on" to the HEN'S TEETH compilation ridiculous, even more so since BOTH releases have them in the same chronological order. The SHY BOY compilation has only five additional tracks as well, all unreleased. There are two takes of an unreleased song, "Land Of Sea", an alternate take of "And She Cried", and two BBC Sessions, "Shy Boy" and "Younger Girl" (another unreleased song). Except for the noted ridiculous statement in the beginning, Mr. Granados has written a detailed and very informative history of the group.

OTHER FINE RELEASES FROM BRINSLEY SCHWARZ: Brinsley Schwarz/Despite It All, Silver Pistol/Please Don't Ever Change, Nervous on the Road/The New Favourites of Brinsley Schwarz, Original Golden Greats/Fifteen Thoughts of Brinsley Schwarz, What Is So Funny About Peace Love And Understanding, Cruel to Be Kind, Greasy Truckers Party

Do You Need This If You Have "HEN'S TEETH" ??? 3 Sep 2011

The only Kippington Lodge tracks available until now were, as SHY BOY's Reissue Producer Stefan Granados states in the opening paragraphs of his lengthy and otherwise informative booklet notes, "...(some of) their singles (were) crudely tacked on to a Brinsley Schwarz compilation CD in 1998". The compilation in question, Hen's Teeth, was actually a wonderful addition to the Brinsley's catalog, 22 chronological tracks of non-album singles and B-sides, some under aliases, that led off with 10 tracks by Kippington Lodge. Leading off a chronologically compiled compilation is far from being "tacked on"! If you ever find one, grab it quick, you won't be disappointed......

I finally received my copy of SHY BOY today, and found that BOTH releases have the previously released Kippington Lodge tracks in the same chronological order. The SHY BOY compilation has only five additional tracks, all unreleased. Even those who own HEN'S TEETH will want this excellent compilation for the unreleased tracks and the nine pages of biographical notes, interspersed throughout with many rare photos, label scans and memorabilia.......

long overdue release, its great to hear what nick and the boys where doing in the pre brinsley shwartz days, this is a very interesting release with a lot of psych sounding songs and a well done remastering job the photos that come with this are great, i guess they where very little and unknown during this period but look what became of nick!!!!!! not that im a fan of all his stuff but with this line up this is kind of like pre brinsley shwartz, very catchy late 60s uk pop/psych any fan of that will love this.
Kippington Lodge - 'Shy Boy: Complete Recordings 1967-1969' (RPM) 15 May 2012
By Mike Reed - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Good, worthy (yet, virtually unheard-of + underground) British psychedelic pop band. From what I could tell, Kippington Lodge never released a full album - simply a couple of 7" 45 vinyl singles. This fifteen track compilation is apparently everything they ever recorded. Personally, I liked both versions of "Shy Boy" as well as both edits of "And She Cried". Also dug the beautifully-played "Land Of Sea", the catchy "Understand A Woman", their true gem "Tomorrow Night" (definitely, one of the disc's best songs, hands down) and "I Can See Her Face". Line-up: Brinsley Schwarz - guitar & vocals, Nick Lowe - bass & vocals, Bob Andrews - keyboards and Billy Rankin - drums. Should appeal to fans of The Poets, Tomorrow, Idle Race and Mike Stuart Span.
