Very stylish looking case, small but is very easy to work on. Well made product with no rough edges on the chassis to cut your hands on. The access from the top is made even easier by removing the DVD drive cage which lifts straight out once the retaining screws are removed. DVD Drive is hidden until the eject button is depressed and the front panel flaps downwards before the DVD tray opens, very flash mechanism! The Front USB ports are concealed by a spring loaded panel, which flaps down when pressed. DDR3 memory is still so expensive, so I bought one Corsair 4Gb stick (£50) with the intention of occupying the remaining 3 slots when the price drops in a few years time. Runs extremely quiet compared to my mini-tower that this replaced. Note: make sure that your CPU is compatible with Intel HD Graphics technology to utilize on-board graphics function as it uses the CPU to drive the graphics. I used an i5 661 3.33 GHz CPU which was a easy to fit. It ships with two SATA cables, so if you intend to fit two HDD's then you need to purchase another SATA cable. Amazon had the best price at the time for this unit and two months on it is still the same price

Cool box, useless company 25 Jan 2011
By Scott C. Locklin - Published on Amazon.com
I was going to buy this from Amazon, but I hate returning stuff via the mails, so I ended up getting it at my local computer mega store.
I won't lie; it was a difficult build. First problem: even though there is a video port out, it only works if you buy the special Intel CPU's with video built in. I hadn't heard of this, nor had I read the review which stated this, nor was it anywhere on Shuttle's documentation. Eventually I found it in a FAQ on a forum somewhere. Lame. So, back to the store to buy a low end video card. Then, the thing still wouldn't POST. When crap don't POST, and you don't have compatible hardware kicking around, it is a nightmare. I tried the obvious; resetting CMOS. Nope. Remove all the memory. Nope; nothing. Clean cpu contacts with methanol? Nope. Finally, in my frustration, I hit the CMOS over and over again ... and it POSTed. WTF? I suspect the guy above who has gone through 3 attempts didn't have my monomaniacal insistence that this thing work: I had already lost the box the CPU came in, and didn't want to argue with the dudes who sold it to me.
I loaded debian on it with no difficulties after this, and have run it for 24 hours using the mprime95 torture test; no problems at all. I declare this machine a success as a numerics toaster. It barely gets hot working at full power.

Shuttle, as a company, has utterly failed at tech support, however. During my panicked very-little-sleep fails to POST, I found an absurd list of "compatible hardware" on their website. This hardware list must have been just old junk their engineers had lying around: neither my memory nor my video card matched it, so I contemplated bringing 'em back and attempting with their "approved" list. Except their "approved" list is so antiquated that nobody sells them any more. Way to go guys: thanks for putting up completely useless and unactionable information which freaks out your customers. No information would have been better. I already know what kind of CPU the board can take.

Looks like a toaster but acts like a beast 22 Sep 2010

I bought this barebone kit after my friend recommended shuttle to me for building a small form factor desktop. I have been running this desktop with a i5 quad core 2.8 ghz, MSI GTX 470, 8 gig ripjaw ram 1333 mhz, and Intel 80 GB SSD. Upgraded the power supply with a 500W one from shuttle. So far the performance of my desktop is flawless and the system is very stable. The form factor is a huge plus because I don't have much room in my room. But even with such a tiny case, I am running Crysis with everything on full on a dell 24" monitor and the FPS is quite playable.

I would highly recommend this desktop for anyone who wants a portable desktop that can perform like a full tower. In terms of noise and heat this case is actually very good. During normal desktop use, the fan is barely audible (there is only 1 fan cooling both the case and CPU). Depending on the video that you choose, the desktop may be significantly louder during gaming. For example, my GTX 470 generates a butt load of heat (90 C load temperature) and the computer is quite loud at full load. The sound level is similar to that of a PS3 during a video gaming session. It is loud but it doesn't take away from the gaming experience. You could actually reduce the heat quite a bit by keeping the cover off.

Pros:
Small form factor
Good heat management
SD card reading
2 USB + firewire port in the front
Stable motherboard

Cons:
Only 2 SATA slots cables included. It does have 4 SATA slots
If you have a giant video card you won't be able to use the second PCI slot.

Holy smokes! It works! 21 April 2011

This is my second PC I have built. I am not an engineer. I like Shuttle Barebones strategy because the power and motherboard are already installed - which at least reduces the chance of error.

My strategy was to buy all mid-tier components as the optimal price - performance strategy. My specs were:
i5 CPU @ 2.8
Sapphire 5570 Graphics Card
8G DDR3 Ram
Pioneer Blu Ray DVD Player
2 Terabyte HD (for storage)
128G OCZ Solid State Drive (for Windows and heavily used programs and files)

This thing hums. It's super-quiet. Doesn't generate much heat. Is super-compact and relatively light. So happy!

Also, it was easy to build - which was unexpected - and it worked the FIRST time I booted it up. I constructed the whole thing in an hour - with some help screwing in items. It was pretty easy.

Overall, this is great. 3 storage bays, a small form, and reasonably fast. My only concern is that 300W is not much power. It would have been nice to have 450W - although heat management is probably a challenge in such a small box. Also, as a heads up, they only provided 2 SATA cords, so I had to buy a third to hook in the third device. Oddly, they provided more than enough power attachements...
