It is the middle of the 21st century and in New Britain the behaviour and feelings of children are controlled by drugs and by education without soul. Everyone is chilled and everywhere is plugged in. Everywhere, that is, except a remote island community called Rainbow Dreams. There the RD brothers and sisters choose freedom, the sea and earth, and to breathe air that is not disinfected. But what happens when the two worlds collide? The story begins with Sam and Lia, two babies born at the same time in the same mainland hospital. Sam goes back to live on the island while Lia returns to live her bright white sanitised life and attend her hi-tech linegraded school. But the bond between them grows stronger with time, and when a dying horse brings Lia back to Rainbow Dreams it begins a series of events that bring conflict, betrayal and fear. But who or what is the biggest threat: the documentary film crew, the Department of Linegraded Education or the troubled but gorgeous Rory, whose fascination with Lia unsettles Sam as much as his aggression? There is a battle to fight, but can it be won?
About the Author
Sue Hampton is a teacher who believes in creativity and discovery, individuality and fun. This is her third novel for Pegasus after SPIRIT AND FIRE and VOICE OF THE ASPEN and she hopes it will make her readers think about the kind of education and future they want.

Sue came to my school and really helped me with my English story writing. Although she is an accomplished writer, I found the story a little boring and confusing. Don't get me wrong, she is a lovely person but her stories are like an aquired taste, you either love it or you hate it. I am sort of in between

Although written primarilly for young teens there is much, in this book, that adults can enjoy. In fact I would advise parents to read this book as a good example of what their children should be reading.
This book satisfies on many levels. On the one hand it is a very good story - fast paced and exiting. The characters have real depth and you end up caring about what happens to them.
On the other hand the book highlights serious issues such as the way our education system is going, loneliness, relationships and how different people cope in a crisis.
As one reviewer pointed out 'this book makes you think'. Something a lot of books, these days, fail to do.
An enjoyable and challenging read.
