Biography

Composer, guitarist, singer, and bandleader Frank Zappa was a singular musical figure during a performing and recording career that lasted from the 1960s to the '90s. His disparate influences included doo wop music and avant-garde classical music; although he led groups that could be called rock & roll bands for much of his career, he used them to create a hybrid style that bordered on ... 5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Zappa 31 July 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Zappa is not for everyone (Just ask my wife)and those who do like him are often split between those who who like his music but not his lyrics and those who only want to hear his songs and not instrumentals such as those contained on these three discs. Me, I'm in the former group, yes I like his songs but there are only so many songs I can listen to about sluts, weanies and yellow snow, so this album (and its follow up Guitar) is very close to perfect Zappa for me. It was not always thus. My cousin recommended it to me many years ago and being a young man with too much money I went out and bought it without listening first. Got it home, put it on and thought 'What the hell is this!!!!'. Thankfully over the years I've kept returning to it and it has grown on me to the extent that I have now replaced my original copy for this remastered version.

So firstly, the music. If you like instrumental guitar music (If not why on earth are you reading this)then this is for you. It's pleasures are not as immediate as Joe Satriani et al, but stick with it, it will reward you with some beautiful guitar and after a while you will just keep returning to it. At that point you will then go out and buy its follow up, Guitar which is its equal. Secondly, the remastering. If you have the old 2 disc version and are wondering whether to invest in this remastered version, yes it is worth it. If these concert damaged ears can hear the difference anyone can.

4.0 out of 5 stars A record of a truly unique guitarist 15 July 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
For anyone who is interested in rock guitar, it's a must-have. Mostly it's recorded live, and it's almost 100% guitar solos - often the song that went around the solo has been edited out. If you know the guitar style of Frank Zappa you'll know that no-one else comes close to it, and if you like what he does then this is a pure and undiluted thrill from start to end.

4.0 out of 5 stars wonderfully indulgent 13 Jan 2005
By padster
Format:Audio CD
If you love long, wild and wierd guitar solos, supported by fantastic musicianship from the whole band, with a dose of humour, then this is the album for you.
I used to covet my friend's triple vinyl box set - and was so glad when it came out on CD. It's certainly not easy listening - a lot of this is quite extreme jazz-rock, strange time signatures, non-western scales and tunings, sudden stops and starts etc. If you play it at work, someone will probably ask you to turn it down. But that's the joy of it - this is heavy, strange stuff, to be played really loud, maybe while driving alone, slightly too fast, late at night.
My God - Zappa could play! And his band, in its various manifestations, was world-class.

5.0 out of 5 stars Guitar Heaven 14 Jun 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
OK, this isn't for everyone, maybe it isn't even for every guitarist... but it's FABULOUS.
This is a player who knows his stuff backwards. If you're a budding guitarist listen to this set - wish I had, years ago. Just be aware that everyone else around you is likely to be very unimpressed - charlatans!

5.0 out of 5 stars guitar heros 4 Feb 2011
Format:Audio CD
frank zappa is my guitar hero and i am a fan of all aspects of his music but it was his guitar solos that really got me into his music and later to appreciate his unique humor.one of my early favorite solos being black napkins.until the release of shut up n play yer guitar only a few people realized what the hard-core zappa fanatics had known all along ...that frank zappa can play the guitar.while the papers and magazines shouted the praises of every other fashionable guitar strangler and condemned zappa for having the guts to sing lyrics they felt were disgusting he quietly continued to play things on his instrument that were far more blasphemous than any words could convey.in the rush to be offended by what he said the music press forgot to listen to what his guitar was talking about.zappas guitar solos as captured in this album say a lot of things that just might prove to be embarrassing to the writers who forgot to listen.this album is for hard core fans .. guitar players and anyone who is into guitar solos my personal favorites if i had to pick are ship ahoy pink napkins and canard du jour.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ship Ahoy! 8 July 2006
Format:Audio CD
Frank Zappa, Vinnie Colaiuta, Warren Cucurullo, Ike Willis,

Arthur Barrow, Tommy Mars et al all improvising... nuff said!

Highlights include;

HOG HEAVEN: Murderous octaver guitar balancing on a rythmn that sounds like it is stuck in tar or sand. Are the Hogs Harleys or Pigs? 'God! That was really beautiful'

SHUT UP `N PLAY YER GUITAR: The Inca Roads solo in all it`s majesty. Vinnie excels and Frank lets the molten wave notes cascade into the ears of foolish young consumers. Their minds forever twisted.

HEAVY DUTY JUDY: My personal favorite on this collection. Later to be played by the 1988 big band as a concert opener. A static synthesizer vamp holds the rudder whilst Frank,Vinnie and Arthur tear it up.Play at loud volumes and your Mum,Dad,Wife,Kids,Neighbours will not be impressed.

Been listening listening to these solos/improvisations for 23 years and I am still dumbfounded by the notes contained therein

5.0 out of 5 stars A musician's musician 29 Nov 2006
By Big D
Format:Audio CD
By all means, remember Zappa for his irreverent humour contained in, "Catholic Girls", "Don't eat the yellow snow", "Ring of Fire" and "Why does it hurt when I pee?" et al. Then take the time to listen to his absolute mastery of the electric guitar on this triple album "Shut up 'n play yer guitar".

Not many "worshipped" electric guitarists over the last 30 years can come close to his guitar playing prowess. In my humble opinion, he was one of the very, very best - Ever.

Do yourself a favour - Buy this album, put on your earphones and immerse yourself in the talent that was, and always shall be the late, great, Frank Zappa - The Musician.
