The headphones just ooze quality. They are reference headphones made for professionals who wear them for hours at a time so you know they are going to be comfortable. The sound even straight out of the box knocks spots off my £30 toys and when I crank them up I get pure music at loud volume instead of a load of muggy muddy distortion. They will sound even better when they are burned in.

Incidentally, I was pretty ignorant about the burning in process and got the following helpful reply from a forum elsewhere when I asked about the process:

"When a product is new any moving parts will be slightly stiff, headphones create sound through use of a vibrating diaphragm which moves thousands of times in just a few seconds. The diaphragm is designed to keep this up for years (10 - 20 if you're lucky) and I believe not being used to this movement the sound produced is a little "hard" at first. Comparing a brand new, just out of the box headphone to the same model with a few hundred hours listening time bares this out. The new headphone has a certain lack of subtlety and normally seems to have more treble and less bass - as the new headphone gathers more listening time an increase in sound stage is normally noticed too".

I listen to a wide range of music including, rock, folk, jazz, blues, ambient, world music and classical. I also use headphones on my electric guitar amplifier and everything sounds so much cleaner and crisper. I'm hearing subtle nuances on tracks I've been listening to for decades. I feel like I want to listen to EVERYTHING in my collection!

I've listened to many consumer headphones around this price and the SRH840 is surely the best. There is literally no comparison if you want beautifully balanced sound for under £130

First impressions were the design. These phones ooze quality. Nice matte plastic. Comfy leather or pleather ear cups (you get a spare set). A coiled cable to increase both resilience and prevent tangling. They've thought of pretty much everything. This however comes at a cost. These are big and somewhat heavy. They look a little silly on your head, but then again, if sound reproduction is your priority, this is a negated point. Secondly, the headband feels a little flimsy. It slightly twists, but then again, not worryingly so. You can also fold the headphones due to the reversible Dj design and store them in the supplied drawstring case. A hardcase might have been a better choice, but it's adequate.

Regarding the sound, everything I've listened to sounds different. Now by no means is my Onkyo 22-HDX bad at sound reproduction. But with the 840's I can pick out nearly every instrument in a song. There is no mish mash of sounds. There is no overpowering bass or drum track. Every instrument gets it's own recognition here. But not at the expense of the overall sound. This said, the headphones cope comfortably with classic, to rock and pop. The high's perhaps could be a little better, but the mid and low range are fantastic. You will enjoy listening to all your music again and appreciating stuff you never though you'd heard before, but was always there.

There are a few drawbacks to mention. Certain tracks like the Narratives "Fade" have a section with some harsh guitar electric strumming (not really sure what to call it).

First off the order came when it was supposed to. Really quick so thats good.

Now these headphones were until recently Shure's flagship over ear set. They've just been replaced by the SRH940. So what this actually means is that the price on the SRH840's have come down loads. These baby's were priced at over £200 till recently and they were really highly reviewed at that price. Shure makes some of the best stage microphones around, notably the SM58 and its various adaptations being the pr standard for many years. So this is a pro headphone made by a pro company. Build quality isn't going to be an issue then. They feel really well built. The coiled lead attaches to the headphone in a solid and stable manor. The only minor niggle is that on the phones themselves there are exposed wires on either side of the cups. I have had no trouble so far with them catching on anything, but it's one to watch out for.

I researched a lot before buying and found a number of reviews on forums that all said great things about the sound, but many said about the comfort being an issue. Let me just put this one to bed. While these are not the lightest headphones around, they are very comfortable. Some said about the headband on top irritating the head. This I have not experienced at all. They are well padded and extend well. They fit well and the only complaint I think anybody could have is one that all closed back type headphones suffer from, which is they get a little hot inside now and again after long listening periods. Now I recommend anyone using headphones for long periods to take breaks at least every hour, if only for a minute. This will stop the problem, which really isn't much of an issue anyway.

Now the important bit. The sound.
