5.0 out of 5 stars Expensive. Worth every penny., 15 May 2007

I've been using a set of Shure E3c headphones for several months now, and they sound so good that I was sceptical that headphones could sound much better. Seeing that Amazon had the top of Shure's range at just over half price, I decided to treat myself, and have discovered that yes, headphones *can* sound better than the E3cs!

The first notes through these reveal that these are like no other headphones you've heard before. The treble is crisp and accurate, and the bass is beautifully integrated - deep, but not artificially emphasised as on most canal phones. Don't misunderstand me - if there is bass on a recording, these phones will reveal it, but it doesn't swamp everything else. The clarity is what is impressive - it is easy to separate instruments and different strands of music. The highest praise I can give them is that they sound like a much larger set of (very expensive) headphones.

For your money, you also get a large pile of accessories, and a nice metal box to store everything in, but that is really just icing on the cake. They are probably the most expensive headphones you'll buy - but they are worth every penny.

If you've spent time (and oodles of cash) putting together a near reference quality sound system, you clearly appreciate high end sound....

Then you buy an iPod - and oh dear, it just doesn't cut it! Until that is, you buy a pair of these fabulous ear buds! I'm not promising reference quality sound (after all the Apple file format isn't quite CD quality), but it is a monumental improvement on anything else out there! The sound is clear, very natural, very well balanced and very detailed, particularly considering the size of the drivers. (This also applies to the base - if, however, you are looking for massive, dominating, overbearing base, then look elswhere!)

If you can afford them, and if you appreciate high quality, high end sound - buy them! You won't be dissapointed!

(NB: I find the PTH device a bit cumbersome, though thankfully you don't have to use it!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Blew the competition away!, 21 July 2007
This review is from: Shure E500PTH - Sound Isolating Earphones (Electronics)
I am a bit of a headphone magpie. I have tried the top end, lacklustre bass Etymotic ER-4P Isolator In-Earphones and the Shure E4cs which, in my opinion were better in that the bass is a lot more involved than the Etymotics.

However, both pairs were not particularly comfortable; the Etymotics being quite painful, as they had to be pushed so far into the ear.

The Shure E500PTH earphones are in a completely different league though and nothing comes remotely close!

Stunning is the only word I can think of that describes them. The obvious use of two woofers, gives the bass a wonderfully full presence and there is masses of detail in the rest of any music.

I used them for a few minutes in my Ipod, then plugged the E4Cs back in. The difference was unbelievable; the E4Cs sounded awful; tinny and bright.

In the box, is a bigger audio jack, for ghetto blasters! Also, the PTH battery operated volume control, which is quite bulky, can be swapped for either no volume control on the wire, or a bog standard one near to the jack. Other bits include, various earpads and flanges and a battery for the PTH unit. There is also a soft carry pouch. The whole thing is packed up into a two toned brushed metal box, with lift off removable lid, which in itself weighs a lot! The headphones are in polished Haematite and are very pretty, but there is a noticeable size difference in the bud, but not so that it makes them bulky, in any way.

If you can pick up the E500s up at a price of sub £250, like I did, from a Marketplace seller, then the pain isn't so bad. But, they are worth every penny and I wouldn't go back now.

In a complete class of their own and, they're comfortable!
