Treehorn is clearly shrinking, and his parents aren't the least bit interested. His mother is obsessed with whether or not her cake will rise. His father, at one point addressing a son who can barely see over the table, states blindly, "Nobody shrinks." Treehorn doesn't seem all that bothered that his clothes are hanging over his extremities; he just feels someone should know. But the adults he tries to notify brush off his claim as either a ploy for attention or downright bad behaviour.
Treehorn's parents, his teacher and his principal respond (or fail to respond) to his drastically diminishing stature in ways that will ring true to any kid who has tried to convince adults of the existence of fairies, the Loch Ness Monster or things that go bump in the night. Edward Gorey's stark, intricately patterned black-and-white drawings are simultaneously quaint and creepy, setting the perfect stage for Treehorn's tale--a story for any child who has ever felt ignored by grown-ups (in other words, a story for all).

For anyone who loved Flat Stanley, The Shrinking Treehorn is a must read. Treehorn, a likeable, gentle young chap wakes up one day to find he is shrinking. This short book for children, part of the Young Puffin Read Alone series, charts Treehorn's progress through the world as he gradually shrinks. It records reactions to his changing appearance and tells of his happy recovery to his normal stature. Like all really good short stories, however, there is a twist in this tale which should not be given away here. The characters make this book a really humorous treat. Treehorn's bizarrly detached parents are only outshone by his school teacher who makes the magnificent pronouncement "We don't shrink in this class." Watch out also for other stars including the school receptionist, the Principal and Treehorn's friendly bus driver. An added bonus are the illustrations of Edward Gorey whose trademark black and white line drawings will amuse and inform you and your child. I'd recommend this to read on your own and to read with a child - it might also be good for a child to read alone but you might not be able to wait that long or want to miss out on the fun!

This book doesn't seem that well known in the UK but is an American classic. I was first introduced to it when my teacher read it to the class about 25 years ago and I loved it. Something recently sparked that memory and I decided to buy it for my daughter (and me). I was a bit worried I would be disappointed by my childhood memory of this book - but not at all! The story is sad and amusing, and open to your own interpretation of what is happening. Once you've read it you kind of want to read it again. The illustations are fantastic.

I would recommend this book to anyone, young or old. When I first read it, around twenty+ years ago, I was a kid and this became my favourite book, remaining so for years. The dry humour and irony in the book were not lost on me even then; I'd say that it's a nice little introduction to a slightly more advanced humour for an inquisitive young child. The book still made me laugh when I picked up a copy a couple of years ago. Plus, Edward Gorey's illustrations are wonderful and I've been a fan of his ever since.

I had this book when I was a little girl, now that I am all grown up I have bought it for my little boy who I hope loves it as much as I did/do.

Love this book.
This is a book that I still read at 29 and first had read to me at the age of 6 and I love it! I bought this one for a friends little boy. Fab!
