Product Description

In this day and age with time short, money shorter, and all the really good therapists on daytime talk shows, what is the average neurotic person to do? Until now they were up the Danube without a prognosis. Now, however, Shrink Yourself allows patients to have years of indepth Freudian psychoanalysis for one low price. No more free-floating anxiety about castration or death swirling around in their heads until others have time to tackle their paralyzing little problems. Thanks to Shrink Yourself both conscious and unconscious can rest. It's easy to use: the reader need only find a comfortable couch and Shrink Yourself will guide them through an emotionally fulfilling Freudian therapy session. Repression, dream analysis, childhood trauma, Freudian slips, neurotic symptoms, sexual repression, Oedipus complex, ink blots and penis envy are all covered. Best of all, there's. no bill!

This book is nothing like its title suggests. It is in fact a "humour" book that I didn't find in the slightest bit amusing. Typical joke: the fifty-minute hour is standard. Another: hot dog in a free association task. Yet another: castrator - sorry, I meant mother. You get the idea.

Even more annoying, the book is largely blank space, for your "responses" - although given the lack of real content this can only be a gimmick. For example, pages 5-10 contain the words "yes" four times, "hmmm" (and variants) four times, and "continue" once. And that's it. The whole book is like that.

In summary, I was extremely disappointed. There must be a big market for a serious book called: "Shrink yourself: The complete do-it-yourself guide to Freudian psychoanalysis". This book doesn't do what its title suggest, so if that's your interest, avoid it.

Don't expect a self-help book. This is a joke book. One joke. The foregoing reviewers are playing along with it. Sorry to ruin it.

This Book is a Kick in the Head! 4 Mar 2001
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
By some strange chance, I happened to be sitting with the author, Ted Meyer, on a plane trip to Southern California from the Bay Area. He had observed that I was reading a psych book and offered me a copy of his new book to peruse (it had been only two weeks since "Shrink Yourself" was published).

After taking in the few short introductory pages on how to use it, I was launched directly into the therapy "session". WOW! I felt as if I was with Dr. Freud himself and that he was responding to my every thought. Purposefully and resolutely, I was guided through the good doctor's 50-minute time allotment. Each new page brought forth in my mind greater revelations. I was especially struck by what surfaced on page 53.

After finishing it, I just couldn't give it back to Ted. I had to have it! So I bought it from him on the spot and asked him to autograph it for me. He graciously accepted and wrote "Fred -- Glad you've gotten over the fear of flying."

Thank you, Ted. Your book may well deliver just what our world needs so desperately in these trying times.

A landmark work 6 Mar 2001

In an age of USA Today and Headline News tickers, only occasionally does the written word touch our psyches. And when it does, boy it hurts. Shrink Yourself is one of those rare books.
