Product Description

BBC Review

When this collaboration between Neurosis’ Scott Kelly, Melvins’ Dale Crover, Om’s Al Cisneros and Scott ‘Wino’ Weinrich was announced, the weight of expectation could hardly have been greater. After all, considering some of the jewels in their collective discography, who would dare bet against them? Wino alone has blessed the metal world with a string of great albums by The Obsessed, Spirit Caravan, The Hidden Hand and the legendary Saint Vitus. Neurosis and Melvins, meanwhile, have done much throughout their careers to broaden and break down heavy rock’s sometimes rigid boundaries.

All involved would probably hate the term, but Shrinebuilder is nothing short of a supergroup. Supergroups, however, have a nasty habit of underachieving. Think Audioslave, Zwan or even Guns N’ Roses spin-off Velvet Revolver. Shrinebuilder, however, avoids the pitfalls of clashing egos and reveals itself as a truly transcendent rock record.

Their styles may differ, but as guitarists, Scott Kelly and Wino complement each other perfectly. This blend of apocalyptic doom and repetitive, mantra-like space rock sounds like the work of one man. With Cisneros’ bass throbbing ominously below and Crover’s drumming nailing it all to the floor, they could scarcely hope for a better rhythm section.

Clocking in at an average of over seven minutes, these tracks blaze and smoulder in turns, shifting smoothly between the two states with consummate ease. Like some vast force of nature, the four pull together, erecting sheets of guitar noise overlain with howling vocals before melting it all down into sublime, almost pastoral instrumental passages.

When four combustible, competitive musicians are locked in a room for three days with a tape machine rolling, the results are rarely dull. Great things were forecast for this unlikely project and great things have duly been delivered. It might just be a bridge too far to call Shrinebuilder spiritual, but these guys have clearly tapped into forces far greater than themselves. --Greg Moffitt

Well, here it is. The collaboration between Wino, Al Cisneros, Scott Kelly & Dale Crover. Sound good? You bet ya.

To be perfectly honest, i'm not the biggest fan of any one of these artists. Yes I like Neurosis, Sleep, Om & the Melvins not to mention the numerous projects Wino has been involved in, notably St Vitus & The Obsessed. But none of these are in my favourite band category. Having said that, they are for many people. Taking Neurosis as an example, they have created a sound & style all their own which is often imitated & referenced but never really bettered.

As a jump off point then, Scott Kelly's presence on this release is huge, how can it not be? He takes vocals on all the tracks & there are plenty of the drawn out ominous riffs that his main band are so well known for. But he doesn't dominate the proceedings, oh no. There is just as much influence from the others to make this a truly perfect collaboration. In fact, alot of this stuff take's Om's meditative, spiritual approach. It's heavy & beautiful in equal measures but there is also plenty of build up & introspection to much of it. Take second track Pyramid Of The Moon, which starts off with a Neurosis riff with Wino providing some clever effects untill half way through where is breaks down into a chant & very typical vocals from Cisneros. Likewise, The Architect is a Wino track with a thunderous vocal section from Kelly, quality Wino lead & superb bassline from Cisneros. In fact, to my mind Cisneros probably stands out just about the most, with his brillant basslines always clear in the mix no matter how fierce it gets.

Lastly Dale Crover must also get a mention for keeping the whole thing together with such expert skill. When I first read of his involvement here, to me it felt like abit of an after thought. Don't get me wrong, he's a brillant drummer & his work with the Melvins is superb. It just felt like he was slightly out of place against the other artists. This is definetly not the case as he shows a reserved but still very varied & well judged performance bringing the best from the others. He flows particularly well against the bass as displayed on Pyramid of The Moon & the slow build melody of my personal favourite Blind For All To See.

As I said before, this really is a perfect collabortion, probably the best super group imaginable for this sort of music. I don't know if this will be my favourite release of 2009 but thats largely because it's been an excellent year for it so far. Having said that, this needs to be heard by anyone remotely interested in any of the artists involved. Professional, complex & emotive metal of the highest order. Just imagine buddist monks armed with instruments & predicting the apocalypse & you'll be half way there. Top marks.

Shrinebuilder was not a band I was very aware of but had heard of.Then I saw the cd in a shop. From the photo on the slipcase I could see members of Melvins,Om/Sleep,Neurosis,St Vitus/Obsessed,and in one band, this has to be good,I have to buy this.It is good.Heavy, complex, delicate, elements of all the parent bands coming together to make something new.

Shrinebuilder 26 Sep 2011

Shrinebuilder are an exciting super group formed from great and influential artists in the Doom, Sludge and Stoner genres, who play an elaborate mixture of the three styles resulting in an incredibly strong and well formed rock and metal listening experience.

The line up features Scott Kelly on guitar and vocals (Neurosis and frequent and vocal guest to Mastodon) Al Cisneros on bass and vocals (Sleep/Om) Dale Crover on the drums (The Melvins) and finally the legendary and hardworking Scott `Wino' Weinrich on guitar and vocals (Saint Vitus, The Obsessed, Spirit Caravan, The Hidden Hand and vocal guest to Clutch, Probot and more)

With a line up like that, a whole sub-community of rock and metal fans should be clamoring all over this band. The best thing of all however is that, unlike most super-groups Shrinebuilder actually gel really well as a band and turn in a collaborative feeling record that actually sounds both as good as the sum of its parts and as if it was written together in a room by all the members, rather than just hastily compiled from their own individual songs.

Even with this collaborative feel and distinct Shrinebuilder sound however, each individual member still manage to put their own stylistic stamp on each and every song.

The tracks on their self titled debut studio album from 2009 are all fairly long and explore a mixture of moods, with rumbling bass, fuzzy effects laden lead guitar and a mixture of vocal styles that range from a classic rock feel to loud sludge style barking, often transitioning seamlessly.

The album is absolutely consistent throughout and all five tracks are exemplary, and would each be a stand out track on anyone else's album. Even the production job is perfect; leaving a remarkable album that can't really be faulted in any serious way. If the band can maintain this standard of quality I really hope to hear more from Shrinebuilder in the future.

In summary, if you like any of the musicians involved in this project or any of the genres from which they come then Shrinebuilder is something that you really ought to check out. Best of all, it all works incredibly well musically and would still be one of the best albums released that year if none of these musicians were famous.
