Another (almost) unheard of Soul treasure revealed,
By
This review is from: Shrine - the Rarest Soul Label Vol.1 (Audio CD)
When you are reading this review, I guess you are someone with a more than average interest in (classic) RnB/Soul music. Shrine was during its short lifetime (1964-66) not a very succesive label with no hits in the RnB charts. They did rather well in their own local area Washington DC, but that was all. That still does not mean that the music wasnot good enough, but marketing and distributing records is and was something completely different than making good music. The music on this record reminds me most of the more unpolished (early) Motown productions. Not so strange when you realise that one of the co-founders of Shrine was Barry Gordy's ex-wife Raynoma who had worked with Gordy in Motown's early days. the people at Ace/Kent have done (as usual) a great job in writing excellent and valuable linernotes and remastering the music. So, if you want your soul music unpolished with some raw edges and want to read about Shrine's history of soul music then this is definitiv an album to buy.

Top drawer Rare Soul from 'the most sought after label',
By gcouch@ednet.co.uk (Newmills, Fife, Scotland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Shrine - the Rarest Soul Label Vol.1 (Audio CD)
Andy Rix and Ady Croasdale bring together some of the best rare soul sounds, from the much sought after Shrine label. The only disappointing thing is the time its taken to release volume 2!
