In an era when it seems that there are more spoof horror movies than genuine ones, Shriek... stands out from the crowd with good casting and more originality than most. Clearly influenced by Scary Movie, but thankfully not using the same old "token black guy" "token virgin" etc jokes, Shriek lampoons everything from 90s slasher pics such as Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer to 70s movies such as Halloween. It even manages to spoof the spoofs, with a parody of Weekend At Bernie's.
The cast is made up of a selection of US TV stars - Julie Benz from Buffy is the main star along with Saved By The Bell's Tiffani Amber Thiessen who proves that she is a very capable comic actress and that there is more to her than late night Channel 5 erotic thrillers. There are also appearances from Tom Arnold (Deputy Doughy) and "Jonathan" from Buffy (basically playing the same character but with the name Boner (pronounced Bonner!).
One of the highlight scenes is a sequence that spoofs VH1's Pop Up Video. As the teen victims escape their hopeless killer, small facts and trivia pieces pop up on screen such as "this actor is afraid of heights" as he jumps off a balcony.
Overall, this is certainly not Hollywood brain surgery, but is an entertaining way of spending 90 minutes. Unlike Scary Movie, it does not matter if you do not have a good knowledge of the horror genre as the film can be enjoyed in it's own right as a decent comedy horror. Surprisingly good then, and certainly one of the best in an overflowing sub-genre.
