After seeing the original Shrek Album, I was disappointed to find a VERY limited amount of actual score music used in the film. Granted, the music was okay, but the atmospheric music really did make the film what it is. Listening to the music without the speech and sound effects of the film is by far, a real treat.
Being a musician in an orchestra and brass-band myself, you begin to appreciate the clever touches in music, and the score in Shrek does not disappoint. I especially liked the introduction of 'Three blind mice'. Track 14 is amazing. The atmospheric music is... well, atmospheric! The themes are easily recognisable, and you can tell where the clever touches are. Superb CD. Superb writers. Makes a superb film.

After watching Shrek I couldn't resist on getting this soundtrack.
The film music composed by Powell and Gregson-Williams is held up by two distinct themes - one representing Princess Fiona and with her the love story. The other main theme represents Shrek and the adventure story.
Fiona's theme captures the fairy-tale, romantic element wonderfully and does in the unmistakable style of other John Powell crafted love-themes (Just Visiting, Evolution). The opening of the film and opening track feature an innocent but tantalizing performance of Fiona's theme, but aside from subtle variations of the theme being employed throughout the score, Fiona's theme makes its most impressive appearances in Dragon!/Fiona Awakens (11) and, of course, the unforgettable Singing Princess (19).
The climatic moments of the film are punctuated by Powell and Gregson-Williams memorable action theme or Shrek's theme. The audience first gets a hint of the theme in Donkey Meets Shrek (3) but is later treated to an earful in the first half of track 11, Dragon!/ Fiona Awakens, and again in Ride the Dragon (25). Musically restating the apparent differences between the princess and the ogre, Fiona's theme is soft and light while Shrek's theme is fast paced and aggressive.
Overall its an entertaining soundtrack from start to finish even though the tracks are short with each one roughly lasting under 2 mins.

After watching one of the funniest films last year I was sure that the tracks included in the film would make a great complilation CD.
Sure enough it did, with tracks from Smash Mouth, Baha Men and The Proclaimers. A wierd mixture you might think but it certainly worked.
Not only these tracks but also the Orignal Score that has now been released shows the work of Harry Gregson Williams and John Powell should never be underestimated. Wonderful mood music which could tell the enchanted story of Shrek all by itself. It's a must buy if you enjoyed the film!

This soundtrack is one of the best i've ever heard. The music is so varied, and it complements the film brilliantly. It brings back all the memories of the film and even if you haven't seen shrek the music is really good. My favourites are 'Welcome to Duloc' and 'Singing princess', as they are also humerous aswell as being decent tracks.
