Video game adaptations of big movies, particularly kid’s movies, tend to get a lot of flak from more hardcore gamers – and not without some justification. Not offering anything original in terms of gameplay is one thing but they’re usually quite shoddily made and with little real connection to the movie they’re supposed to be based on. Shrek The Third won’t be winning any video game awards for innovation but it does at least look and sound like the film and is unlikely to disappoint anyone who simply wants to relive it from the comfort of their own joypad.
In predictable fashion the game is a third person action adventure in which you get to control Shrek, Donkey, Puss in Boots, Princess Fiona, Arthur and Sleeping Beauty. Each has their own subtle differences, from Puss n’ Boot’s double jump to Sleeping Beauty’s guide ability, but combat always comes down to just mashing the attack button as rapidly as possible. Everyone also has their own special move as well, from Fiona’s flying kick to Puss n’ Boot’s "cute puss" move.
Another inevitable aspect of the game is a series of mini-games, but most are actually quite good, particularly Castle Capture where you have to smash down an opponent’s walls and Ships Ahoy where you have to defend a beach from invading pirates. All can be played with a friend outside the game, which is more than can be said of the main story mode which is sadly single player only. The graphics are decent though and everyone looks like their movie selves, even if the celebrity impersonators don’t sound like them. As a video game it’s a fairly average affair all round, but as a marketing tie-in it succeeds with flying colours.

Fun:
I enjoyed this game very much as you follow both shrek and fiona's journey.
Graphics were excellent. Collect coins to visit the gift shop and buy all different kinds of things to help your characters.
The only disappointing thing about this game was i finished it within a day. Perhaps quests could have been made more difficult.

As is the case with most cartoons released nowadays, there was inevitably going to be a video game version of Shrek The Third. These are often seen as little more than an attempt by the movie studio to wring a few more bucks out of their franchise with a hastily developed game which is low on fun and high on profits.
This game could be judged that way. The graphics are average at best, as they are bland, not particularly bright and colourful and the animation is very poor in places. The sound isn't much better with average sound effects and voice acting from `sound-a-likes' rather than the actors from the film.
As for the gameplay, you take control of one of the characters from the film (Shrek, Puss In Boots, Donkey, etc.) and battle your way through various platform-themed levels loosely based on the film. The controls are OK and fighting the various villains is extremely simple as there are only two buttons for combat, plus jump. You can collect fairy dust to use limited special moves, however. Coins are also collected to buy character upgrades from the `gift shop'.
It could all be rather so-so, but Shrek The Third is saved by the various quests you can complete as you progress. These involve collecting items as you go (such as souvenir mugs), completing simple tasks or finishing a level without dying. There are also a few decent boss battles (although the ice dragon is too hard!). This ups the interest quite a bit and provides more challenge. And as this is the Xbox 360 version there are achievements to be had as well, mostly related to collecting items and completing quests.
As well as the main story mode of the game, there are also a small number of minigames which can be played by one or two players. Some of these are decent fun, especially for kids, who may be put off by the occasionally unfair trial-and-error gameplay of the main story (you sometimes have to jump into the complete unknown, or die in ways you could not anticipate until it happens). The minigames are very simple but pass the time well when playing with someone else.
Shrek The Third is a flawed and under-developed game, but younger players will probably enjoy it and there is enough to do to make you want to play through to the end. It passes the time well enough until the next big cartoon movie game comes along.

I was really looking forward to this game as I loved the first game. It was so disappointing. I finished it in only 6 hours. The game seriously lacks any personality. You can't roam around Far Far Away which is what I expected. Overall - it's far too easy, it looks really cheap, and it's Very Very Dull!
