Amazon.co.uk Review

Both of the hit animated movies in one package.

Full of verve and wit, Shrek is a computer-animated adaptation of William Steig's delightfully fractured fairy tale. Our title character (voiced by Mike Myers) is an agreeable enough ogre who wants to live his days in peace. When the diminutive Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow) evicts local fairy tale creatures (including the now-famous Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio and the Gingerbread Man), they settle in the ogre's swamp and Shrek wants answers from Farquaad. A quest of sorts starts for Shrek and his new pal, a talking donkey (Eddie Murphy), where battles have to be won and a princess (Cameron Diaz) must be rescued from a dragon lair in a thrilling action sequence. The story is stronger than most animated fare but it's the jokes that make Shrek a winner. The PG rating is stretched when Murphy and Myers hit their strides. The mild potty humour is fun enough for the 10-year-old but will never embarrass their parents. Shrek is never as warm and inspired as the Toy Story films, but the realistic computer animation and a rollicking soundtrack keeps the entertainment in fine form. Produced by DreamWorks, the film also takes several delicious stabs at its cross-town rival, Disney. --Doug Thomas

In Shrek 2, the newlywed Shrek and Princess Fiona are invited to Fiona's former kingdom, Far Far Away, to have their marriage blessed by Fiona's parents--which Shrek thinks is a bad, bad idea, and he's proved right: the parents are horrified by their daughter's transformation into an ogress, a fairy godmother wants her son Prince Charming to win Fiona, and a feline assassin is hired to get Shrek out of the way. The computer animation is more detailed than ever, but it's the acting that make the comedy work--in addition to the return of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz, Shrek 2 features the flexible voices of Julie Andrews, John Cleese and Antonio Banderas, plus Jennifer Saunders as the gleefully wicked fairy godmother. --Bret Fetzer

5.0 out of 5 stars Funkylicious!, 13 Nov 2004

Mr. AB Taylor (Leek, Staffordshire) - See all my reviews

This review is from: The Shrek Collection - The Story So Far (Shrek 1 & 2 Box Set) [2004] [DVD] [2001] (DVD)
When Shrek first hit our cinema screens a few years ago, it was likely that your whole family was grabbed by the charm of the many characters, before being thrown around all over the place in a flurry of adventure, comedy and downright hilarity. Shrek appealed to all parts of the family by remembering that not everyone who would be watching the film would be under the age of 8. It was funny in many different ways, and the characters were completely loveable.

The magic wasn't quite replicated in Shrek 2, but everyone involved gave it their best shot, so at least the film doesn't fall under the 'trashy sequel' category. The parody of Hollywood and the lifestyle of celebrity is compelling in today's current gossip-obsessed culture, yet the addition of more loveable characters, especially Puss in Boots, ensures that the film appeals to the various parts of its audience like its predecessor.

Indeed, I bought this box set, and I'm 20, and currently living away from my family! It contains two of the best animated films around (as long as we're not talking about Pixar, which I'll sweep under the rug), and has certainly kept me entertained. Far Far Away Idol (the alternate 'ending' from Shrek 2) is something the kids will love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funniest Films around, 2 Nov 2004
This review is from: The Shrek Collection - The Story So Far (Shrek 1 & 2 Box Set) [2004] [DVD] [2001] (DVD)
Shrek 1 when it first came out was comical genoius with mike myers as the voice of shrek, eddie murphy as the voice and donkey and many other great voices. The film is most certainly not just a childs film, but a film for all ages as long as you open your mind up a seemingly child like appearance the film gives. When shrek 2 came out i was expecting a failure, no where near as good as the first, but it is!!! The film is great I highly recommend buying this 2 disc set as it is fantastic

5.0 out of 5 stars Shrek-tacular!, 24 Dec 2004
This review is from: The Shrek Collection - The Story So Far (Shrek 1 & 2 Box Set) [2004] [DVD] [2001] (DVD)
Shrek (1) made its mark in film history as the best animated film for decades. It combined superb animation, an excellent plot and a donkey! Despite its 'U' rating, Shrek was full of laughs and is guaranteed to be enjoyed by adults and children. There are some special features exclusive to this box-set so it's well worth buying if you don't already own Shrek 1.

Many believed that Shrek 2 couldn't compare to the original and that it would be a disappointment. This was certainly not the case! Shrek 2 was filled with humour and topped off by another great storyline. I won't go into detail about the story but it's definitely worth seeing. It's a pity you can't give more than five starts because this film certainly deserves them!

Altogether, I would recommend the box-set to ANYONE! The two Shrek films are worth buying on their own, but when combined with tons of extra features and footage, you get the ULTIMATE SHREK PACKAGE!
