There is clearly something very wrong with me. I seem to be the only person on this planet who didn't think that Shrek 2 was 'oh my god, like, the best film ever'. Did no one else find the film to be a little stagnant when compared to the truly brilliant original.
Case for the prosecution: The movie is almost exactly the same in terms of plot with Shrek trying to get over the barriers of being an ogre in order to maintain his romance with Fiona. A lot of the jokes revolve around movie puns (spider-man and ghostbusters for example), all well and good but something of a lack of originality. The same could also be said of the character humour, still, if it ain't broke then don't fix it.
Case for the defence: Puss-in-Boots! He's awesome and in my humble opinion, totally carried the middle of the movie. Also, whatever else can be said about the movie, it is funny. I found myself laughing or smiling on several occaisions, and because this is a CG feature film it will please the kids on that basis alone (come on, they're guaranteed box office gold!).
Essentially this is just much more of the same, and for the moment its still good enough to raise a lot of laughs but with most of those coming from a new character i couldn't help but feel that this was a very unnecessary sequel which was simply leeching off the success of the first.
At the end of the day if you have kids, they'll love it, and to be honest so will you. Just don't expect the magic or the inspiration of the first all over again. This neat little package should keep all shrek fans happy until the sadly inevitable Shrek 3,4,5...
