5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Forth Volume in Superb Series 30 Jan 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is the forth and final volume in the Showcase Presents World's Finest.
The Showcase presents series of books are amazing.
A big fat telephone book wedge of some of the finest comics ever.
This volume, just like its predecessors does not disappoint one iota.

A word of warning. The stories are not as good as the Batman and Detective Issues- how could they be? That was the height of the best of DC nor for that matter do they match the Superman series.
Simply put the stories were put together to cash in on joining the two most popular DC comics characters in one comic.
So the story matter does suffer. The comics were written for children in the USA of the 1960s and 1970s. The reader of today ie US needs to bear that in mind some stories are a little silly BUT all the more charming for that.

The language and plots reflect their time of writing the 1960s and 70s have a world that was a very simpler place. Science was amazing the possibilities were enless.

True the same themes keep coming up time and time again.
The old Batman gains Super Powers and Superman looses his.
Metropolis and Gotham cities are exchanged and this is a real insight into what the world was like at the time.
Crackpot inventors come up with fabulous inventions that don't hold water for a second- but hey that's part of the charm.

To illustrate think of the suspension of belief when we watch say a Pantomime for example.
True this collection is in black and white and printed on cheap as chips paper but don't let that put you off. I devoured the book with relish and finished the book with regret that I had. (I've got and won't let go of volumes 1,2 and 3 and I really believe that these volumes will only gain in value over the years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Continuing the Fine Showcase Run 18 Dec 2012
By Barnard Rollit - Published on Amazon.com

World's Finest was saddled with pairing Superman and Batman in decades of shared adventures, and as improbable as most of those adventures were (talking improbable even by Silver Age standards here) they were some of my most cherished childhood reading. This volume contains the final run of such adventures on an ongoing basis, before DC took the seemed-like-a-good-idea-at-the-time step of turning the title into Superman's The Brave and the Bold; this volume also contains the first efforts in that new direction, putting the irreparable awkwardness of it onto display from the outset. In that sense, if in no other, this is a must-have collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars World's Finest is Fine! 22 Jan 2013

Another great Showcase collection. These volumes are a great way to colect multiple issues of a title at a reasonable price. The B & W format allows one to truly appreciate the artwork underneath the color. As far as this volume goes, some great stories and some great N. Adams art. Stories were transitioning from the formulaic plots of the early and mid-60's, to the more serious storylines of today. Many of them hold up really well. Some campy stuff too. A fun read.

These black and white reprints of old DC comics are a great way to see them and read them - inexpensively - for those of us that missed them originally. If you like old Superman and Batman comics, this one is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars World's Finest 14 Aug 2013

This is DC's fourth volume in the Showcase Presents World's Finest series from the sixties. If you're nostalgic for those stories, you should consider buying this book. It contains a few of the more interesting stories from that time, including one featuring the notorious Baron Munchausen.
