Aha - the olden golden days, when Superman was an over-grown kid, and shared his world with Supergirl, Superdog, the Bizzaro world and the Bottled City of Kandor. Closer to "Calvin and Hobbes" than "Dark Knight", this is the material that Grant Morrison reimagined so memorably in "All Star Superman", and that Alan Moore concluded so movingly in "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow". Fifty seven varities of Kryptonite, and weekly trips back in time to visit the folks on Krypton. Utterly classic stories like "The Death of Superman" and the one where Superman reveals Supergirls existence to the world for the first time. Buy it be reminded of a time when comics were more like fairy-tales and less like action movies.

Still Wonderful In Black-and-White 5 Jan. 2014
By Daneel Olivaw - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This book reprints the Superman stories from Action Comics #276-292 and Superman # 146-156; generally there was one Superman story in each Action Comics of the time (the Supergirl stories are reprinted in her own two Showcase Presents volumes) and three Superman stories in each issue of his exclusive title.

An earlier reviewer on this page suggested a lack of stories pencilled by Curt Swan. By my count, 27 of the stories in this book are drawn by the popular Swan, though you do get several Wayne Boring, Al Plastino and (one) Kurt Schaffenberger stories as well. Still, there's no reason for Swan fans to pass up this volume.

It's been at least five years since DC published volume 4, the most recent compilation of these stories; I wish they would continue this series. They did publish Superman Family volume 4 in 2013 with Jimmy Olsen and Lois Lane reprints from the same general time period, but it's not the same as the Man of Steel himself.

Memorable Malarkey 25 July 2007

This volume contains the Superman I grew up reading. The plots are ridiculous, the characterizations even more so, but I loved this stuff and still get a kick out of it over forty years later.

Step back in time ... 30 Jun. 2012
By Millard Grubb - Published on Amazon.com

This is the first Showcase archive I bought about Superman. I was very well pleased with the content. Right in front of me in black and white, were the stories I grew up with on many rainy days. To have them all in one book was just fine with me, although color would have been nice. But, no bother... the book is great. Wonderful fun!

So Much Fun! 29 Sept. 2013
By alfafemme - Published on Amazon.com

I love superman comics. I had hoped the pencils would be Curt Swan. Unfortunately it's another artist, but it's still lots of fun. After the meticulous artwork of Swan, it's hard not to be critical of some of the silly facial expressions in this, but the stories are a blast, the artwork is mostly great, and it's hard to criticize thing that is so enjoyable. A+

Crazy Old Stories 2 Feb. 2014

These old stories really take me back. There's plenty of content, and plenty of nuttiness in these reprints. The art is consistently good throughout.
