5.0 out of 5 stars The Dark Knight's lighter times.... 18 Oct 2006
By Bryan TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Without a doubt, this has to be one of the finest collection of Batman stories currently available and at a great value price as well. Starting with the 1960s stories which originally appeared in Detective Comics and Batman Comics, those old enough to recall the Adam West Batman tv series in the 1960s, will be delighted to see where some of the story ideas came from. The Joker, Penguin and the Outsider all appear in this volume, along with Aunt Harriet, Dick Grayson's aunt, a character that wasn't just made up for the tv series! Presented in black and white throughout, the volume of stories work well and is strongly recommended whether you're a Batman fan or not.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this book and do yourself a big favour. 12 Aug 2007
By Mr. Glenn Cook TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
I can not recommend this book highly enough. For once 5 stars do not do it justice. This is a brilliant collection of stories from the titles Batman and Detective Comics of the 1960s.
To basics. Although printed on cheap paper and in black and white this means that the books can be stacked high and sold cheap. Does this detract the reader? NO. Simply because the |American comics tended to have an artist who drew the strips then an `Inker' would go over the pencil marks. A good inker could really enhance the drawings. Finally a colorist would colour them in, rather like those paint by numbers books. So what you still get is the great art and brilliant storylines but loose colour.
Now my point is that no one ever bought these for the colouring in did they? So 2 out of 3 aren't bad.

Now to the stories. They are simply magnificent and a joy for the returning reader such as I to the new reader. There is no way anyone could remember all these stories (??) so the readers are in for a brilliant run through of a well planned and magnificently detail set of stories and nostalgia.
The great thing about this book is that volume two is out as well.
Sheer enjoyment and for less than the cost of a tenner. A bargain.
(Thanks to Prester John for putting me right on the Inker's job)

5.0 out of 5 stars Vintage early 1960's Batman 23 July 2009
By I. R. Kerr TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
The tales collected here are from Detective Comics and Batman's own title published between 1964 to 1965.
The Batman depicted here is not the vengeful dark knight that many people will know, as befits the title of Detective Comics he is a masked detective and along with his sidekick Robin investigates all manner of crimes at the request of Commissioner Gordon and Gotham City's police force. Fans may be surprised at the early heroic departure of one icon from the Batman universe but that's only one of the twists you will find here.
As well as a whole series of whodunnits, criminals with dodgy technology and even a mutant, there's the first sporty Batmobile and the Batboat. Old favourites The Joker, Riddler and Penguin star as Batman and Robin travel the globe to battle with lots of minor villains, a thinking Gorilla, a big game hunter and plenty more.
With contributions by Batman's originators artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger as well as from DC Comic's greats Carmine Infantino and Gardner Fox. This is a great collection of tales and although it is a little slow going at times, as there are no continuous tales here, it's well worth reading for an insight into the history of one of the greatest comic icons ever.
