Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein musical. The plot follows the lives of 3 generations of a theatrical Mississippi riverboat family from the 1880s to the 1920s. It features Paul Robeson as Joe. singing "Ol' Man River," Julie (Helen Morgan) is banished from the showboat for her "mixed race" ancestry. She sings the classics "Bill" and "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man"

Possibly the greatest movie musical of all, this 1936 version of Showboat has Irene Dunne, Allan Jones, Paul Robeson and Hattie McDaniel joining Helen Morgan and Charles Winninger from the original Broadway cast of 1927. So great that, when MGM made their own version in 1951, they tried to have all prints and copies of the original destroyed. Mercifully they weren't quite successful. Closer to the original stage version, this includes most of the classic songs by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein, not least Robeson singing Ol' Man River. Terrific!

THE 1936 VERSION OF SHOW BOAT I FOUND TO BE EXCELLENTLY WELL PRESERVED, GOOD PICTURE AND SOUND QUALITY, LOVELY STORY AND SONGS. IT WAS GREAT TO SEE PAUL ROBESON AND TO HEAR HIS GREAT VOICE.
