4.0 out of 5 stars A gem of a live album 20 Oct 2003
Format:Audio CD
Firstly - you need to like Ry Cooder's voice. A lot of people don't and can't get past that. Even with his wonderful slide work and the singing of his stalwart backers, his voice just seems to ... grate on some people.

Me, I love it. A real individual voice which is laced with a love of the music and rhythm. Of course, with a Ry Cooder album it is the brilliance of the playing which really matters - and this album is no exception. Listening to the band play you only feel bad that you weren't there to experience it first hand.

Special highlights are "do re mi" and "alimony".

A real treat for Cooder fans, but others beware - try Get Rhythm first for his most accessible album.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great live album 9 Jan 2010
Format:Audio CD
This album captures the sense of actually being there. It sounds as though everyone involved-audience and performers -were really enjoying themselves. Just like Bob Dylan and other great artists Ry Cooder never seems to perform a song the same way twice, so even if you already have versions of these songs it is worth getting. In fact, I prefer it to most of the studio versions; the fact that it is a bit "raw" in places makes it more interesting. The kind of band he assembles for his performances obviously has a big effect on the sound. You expect wonderful guitar playing, but you also get Flaco Jimenez on accordion giving a real Tex Mex swing and the superb singing of the gospel singers. My favourites are the Tex Mex version of Do,Re,Mi and Soul inspired Smack,Dab in the Middle and Volver,Volver is a revelation with Flaco on vocals (I assume) - he isn't credited. Every Ry Cooder fan should have this and everyone who likes swinging music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Live Album 3 May 2013
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This album proves that Ry Cooder's live stuff is often even better than his studio recordings. Ry Cooder constantly reinvents arrangements for his well known tracks. Live renditions normally end up being more uptempo, and also feature more extensive, elaborate guitar work.I guess this is similar with most artists playing folk, blues and rock'n'roll material.

Alimony has changed from the origional recording to a double time country / rockabilly feel, with a great guitar solo. Jesus On The mainline has turned into acoustic delta blues with only his backing vocalists joining him. Great slide playing. Dark end Of The Street is a very soulful rendition with Terry Evans and Bobby King handling vocals. Ry plays a cracking electric slide solo. This has got to be the version that the commitments more or less copied.Do-Re-Mi is again double time hillbilly, and all the better for it. Smack Dab in the middle is more up tempo and less laid back. You could easily dance to this version, while you would struggle to do the same with the Chicken Skin Music version....

IMO all these tracks are far superior to their origional studio counterparts - so much more life to them.

The first track is a little bid of an odd inclusion. "School Is Out" IS superb. Great slide guitar doubling with Alto sax. Amazing, but I'm almost certain that it's a studio recording...

Why do artists so often do this on "live" albums?

4.5 out of 5 stars.
