5.0 out of 5 stars For Budding story tellers and writers 17 Oct 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
What a fantastic book. Full of simple cost effective ways of stimulating imagination and building stories. The props are easy to make and reusable. I have used some in my class and after the initial session I left the story stones out and the children go to them again and again. It has increased their language skills and made story telling and the writing of stories fun.
Would recommend a copy for any parent, student teacher ot teacher who wants to enhance their story telling abilities, the kids will love you for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars bring story writing/telling/playing alive! 25 Sep 2012
By Amy Bowers - Published on
Neuberger's book shares 40 ideas, crafts, and games aimed at helping kids invent and play with story telling. Her entire philosophy spoke to my sensibility with her support of open-ended creative play and an emphasis on ample space with simple items to spark imagination.

She offers projects like story disks, dice, grab bags, blocks and stones that get creative juices flowing to start inventing new worlds and adventures.

After a story (or three) is created, she provides projects that let kids "play" with what they wrote. From puppet theaters and stage set pieces to maps and story jars - her ideas are impressive and inspirational. As I read through, I marked many pages of projects I wanted to do with my kids and other home school kids in my circle.

One of the best things about Show Me a Story is the wide age range the activities accommodate. Most of the projects have an appeal from preschoolers to middle schoolers with slight variations and adjustments. I have already marked several writing games to play with the young writers' workshop I host.

I highly recommend this book for any home schooler, crafty parent or teacher. In fact, this would be a fabulous gift for your child's teacher, scout leader or Sunday school teacher.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Golden Resource 25 Aug 2012
By Dana - Published on
As an early childhood educator and parent, I can't say enough about Emily Neuburger's new book. "Show me a Story" is an excellent resource for anyone who works with young children or is a parent. Her ideas are whimsical, playful and creative. Most importantly, for busy adults, they are also easy to follow and implement. The book itself is a piece of art. My 8 year-old daughter loved leafing through the pages with me and eagerly asked, "can we try that?!" What's more, Emily's ideas are fresh-- I had never heard of a story stone before and if you haven't either, I suggest you buy this book.

2.0 out of 5 stars The kindle version is terrible - great content, horrible layout 6 Oct 2012
By Jill Walker Rettberg - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book has lots of great ideas, but the kindle edition is poorly done. On my iPad, the layout is terrible - boring, with small photos where the captions are a paragraph or two away from the picture. There are orphaned subtitles on one page with the text on the next. Having seen some of the inspiring layout spreads in the paper edition I really regret getting the kindle version. A book like this you want to leaf through and feel inspired by and that's really hard to do with the kindle version. It's more like reading raw notes with some random photos thrown in. So if you get this, go for the paper version, I'm afraid....

5.0 out of 5 stars great book for teachers and parents alike 14 Sep 2012
By Annabelle - Published on
As a former elementary school teacher and now stay at home mom, this book really inspired my creativity. The activities and crafts are versatile, fun and easy to expand on. I love the combination of crafts and storytelling and wish I had a teacher who used these creative story starters when I was a school aged writer. It would be easy to fit the crafts and activities into thematic units in the classroom. Best of all, the activities in this book are appropriate and fun for kids of all ages. Reading this book makes me wish i had a creative writing class to experiment with. In the mean time, I will try some out with my own kids.
