I love it very much,it is wonderful combination between two great and unforgetable composers:Zigmund Romberg and Jerome Kern that their music will live forever.

Featuring seven songs each, this dedication to four famous Hollywood/Broadway sopranos gives pride of place to the late Deanna Durbin and LES FILLES DE CADIZ has been extracted from the actual soundtrack of THAT CERTAIN AGE (1938) whilst SAY A PRAYER FOR THE BOYS OVER THERE (HERS TO HOLD - 1943) is the complete version, with other choices typical of her repertoire and range as the star who made box-office gold for Universal Pictures.

Under contract at the same studio, the lesser-known Gloria Jean soon faded in comparison, so the rare recordings on this CD finds her sweetly warbling ANNIE LAURIE and A LITTLE BIT OF HEAVEN as featured in THE UNDERPUP in 1939 as is the complete soundtrack version of VOICES IN SPRING from NEVER GIVE A SUCKER AN EVEN BREAK (1941).

Jane Powell's screen career was mainly promoted by MGM so selections from HOLIDAY IN MEXICO (1946) and LUXURY LINER (1948) are apt, but predating them is the actual soundtrack cut of ROLLING DOWN THE ROAD from the United Artists released SONG OF THE OPEN ROAD in 1944.

Finally, Anna Maria Alberghetti's fame soared during the Fifties in film, stage and television with her selections including songs from Cole Porter's small-screen ALADDIN and Broadway's CARNIVAL.

This release is a must for those who love vocal nostalgia and young sopranos in particular. Hopefully this review specifically refers to ANNA MARIA, DEANNA, GLORIA, JANE as others seem to be inappropriate.

Let the buyer beware!! This CD contains only selections from the "Show Boat" LP. It does not have all of the score which was issued on the original LP. Flare usually does better, but it opted for a CD which included the complete LP of "Rose Marie" (which Sepia had already released) and only selections from the "Show Boat" LP. For collectors, like myself, it was the wrong choice and a disappointment. Perhaps, Sepia will issue the complete Robert Merrill/Patrice Munsel/Rise Stevens "Show Boat" and it will also include, as part of that CD, all of the "Show Boat" recordings Robert Merrill and Dorothy Kirsten made for RCA. That would be a terrific CD to wait for and to buy!!

There are two questions you need to ask yourself before you buy this. The first is why you want a recording of "Rose Marie"; the second is whether you want the most complete edition of the score available on Sepia or "Rose Marie" coupled with "Showboat" (this recording on Flare) or "Rose Marie" coupled with "The Vagabond King" (CFP). "Rose Marie" was one of the big operetta hits of the 1920's, has been filmed at least twice and everyone thinks they love the score. Having listened to the selections from "Rose Marie" included on this release and the CFP album, I've come to the conclusion that I don't love the score of "Rose Marie". There are four good tunes (with dated lyrics) and a nearly good but not quite song that teeters on the edge of being memorable without quite making it.

What is very clear when you listen to some of the other scores of the period is that in terms of good songs, "Rose Marie" doesn't compare with "The Vagabond King" and that Sigmund Romberg was far more generous with his supply of melodies per score than Rudof Friml was. Listen to the new Ghostlight release of "The New Moon". There, even the small incidental numbers have a sparkle that "Rose Marie" simply doesn't have. So does "The Student Prince" (try the TER complete recording on 2 discs). So does "The Desert Song", sadly in need of a complete recording and currently best served by a CFP issue with June Bronhill and Edmund Hockridge. Would someone please reissue the Nelson Eddy/Doretta Morrow recording, not fully complete but offering all the songs and incidentals relating to the main love story in committed perfomances.
