Book Synopsis Only 31 Mar 2008
By Terry Tozer TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
The first comprehensive written history of Shotokan karate in any language!

In this completely updated edition of the classic bestseller, Randall Hassell presents a masterful tale of the history and evolution of Japan's original and largest karate style, Shotokan.

In addition to presenting the compelling story of the style's founder, Gichin Funakoshi, Hassell covers recent developments in the ever-evolving art of Shotokan karate-do. Rare and never-before-published photos complement everything from the Okinawan roots of karate to its development in Japan, the Japan Karate Association, American and international karate organizations, and the current state of the world of Shotokan karate.

Also in this edition: The origins and technical value of all Shotokan kata, a genealogy of traditional karate styles, Gichin Funakoshi's 20 precepts, and much more!

What else is there? 19 May 2011

This is about as authoratative a history as you can get of Shotokan.
The early Okinawan history is A bit sparse but I suppose that sources are a problem. The Japanese history since 1890 is excellent. The many association splits since the 1970s are a bit confusing but the author tries hard to document them.
My only gripe is that the description of the characters is often sycophantic to the point of being grovelling. I know that respect is important in Karate but there is respect and there is brown nosing.
While the style gripes a bit this is probably the only decent historical account of Shotokan.

I really enjoyed this book alot. I've studied Shotokan Karate since 1974, and ever since Mr. Hassell wrote his article for Kick Magazine in 1981, I have been looking for a more detailed account to be published in a book. I am planning on using this book as a study guide for my students. I highly recommend it!
