This book is clear, decisive and easy to follow. The basics and kata are shown in a way that is easy to understand, and make this an invaluable reference book to the practising karateka.

A book that you need. 31 July 2001
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This book is of use to everybody, whatever your reason for studying Karate. I found that this book reinforced all the work that I had done with my instructor in class. I could go home and practise without any problems. I especially liked the fact that each photograph had very little text with it, therefore all you needed was a quick look to refresh your memory. This was very useful when I was trying to remember the Katas! For somebody who does not find learning new moves easy this book has become a life line. It has become my reference book.

There are many karate books on the market but few which deal so lucidly with the practical aspects of Shotokan. The book leaves detailed discussion of the history and philosophy of karate to others and takes the karate-ka through the full shotokan syllabus from beginner to green belt.

Like the King James version of the Bible, it is the language which adds magic and mystery to karate and Japanese terminology is fully explained, both in the text and in a glossary and there is also a comprehensive index.

For each grade, basic techniques, the kata and their application are illustrated by large black and white photographs, typically two per page. However, for the kata this may not be sufficient and whilst each move is demonstrated it is sometimes difficult to comprehend the overall form and shape of the kata making self study a little difficult. It is not always clear in which direction the body should be moving. Nevertheless, it is an excellent book and when used to complement an instructor, will prove invaluable in perfecting and refining technique.
