Product Description

* * * (Warning: Book features adult language and situations.) * * *

“Sometimes she wakes up at night, smelling that gunpowder smell. Ears ringing. A whimpering there in the darkness. Doesn’t always hit her at night, either. Might be in the middle of the day. She should be smelling pizza, or garbage, or cat s**t wafting from the house next door, but instead what she smells is that acrid tang of gunsmoke. All up in her nose. Clinging there like a tick…”

So begins the tale of Atlanta Burns, a young girl with a grim past lingering at the fringes of her droll and dreary high school existence. She’s content to remain there, too, or so she thinks: soon, however, she’s drawn in a battle against two separate groups of bullies – a trio of local troublemakers and a group of Neo-Nazi gay bashers – to save a pair of new and unexpected friends.

But actions have consequences, and by fighting back, Atlanta discovers she’s kicked over a log, thus revealing what hides squirming underneath.

It’s just her, her friends, and a .410 squirrel gun against a handful of bullies and a conspiracy whose worst aspects remain yet hidden.

Can she triumph?

Will her victory be paid in unseen sacrifices?

Or is fighting back just asking for a face full of bad news?

(This is novella #1, a complete tale in and of itself. But Atlanta’s story will continue in episode #2, BAIT DOG.)

“SHOTGUN GRAVY is like VERONICA MARS on Adderall. Atlanta Burns is a troubled teenage girl who’s scared, angry, and not taking s**t from anybody. Chuck Wendig knocks this one out of the park as he so often does.” – Stephen Blackmoore, author of CITY OF THE LOST and DEAD THINGS

“Give Nancy Drew a shotgun and a kick-butt attitude and you get Atlanta Burns. Packed with action and fascinating characters, SHOTGUN GRAVY is a story that will captivate both teens and adults and have them clamoring for the next installment.” – Joelle Charbonneau, author of SKATING OVER THE LINE

5.0 out of 5 stars A Kick Ass Heroine from a Kick Ass Writer 31 Dec 2013
By Morag
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Having read Chuck's non fiction books, and being a devotee of his blog, I had high expectations for this novella. I was not disappointed.

This was a rip-roaring, roller-coaster of a story that grabbed me at the start and didn't let go until the very last page; my kids went hungry, my husband's work shirts were not washed, the dog was not walked, did I care? Not one jot! I was cheering for Atlanta Burns the whole way. A messed up kid trying to make her way in the world with little in the way of guidance and support-I really hope we see a little more of the mother daughter relationship in the next few stories I really want to know what the deal is there-and trying to help others along the way.

There were a couple of teeny tiny proofreading errors but nothing serious even if they did momentarily jolt me out of story mode.

I will definitely be getting the next book in the series as soon as I can and keeping my eyes peeled for more to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars My new favourite anti heroine ! 10 July 2013

I've always been a fan of Chuck Wendig, and I really liked this novella. Atlanta Burns is a great character, a truly reluctant hero who inspires without wanting to ! I'm off to buy the next in the series and I'd recommend any fan of Mr Wendig to do the same .

Anyone who has ever been bullied will get a kick out of Atlanta doing the things that would get real people thrown in jail... I'll be back for more.

5.0 out of 5 stars girl with a gun... 17 Aug 2012

This is a roller-coaster ride of a novella, centring around Atlanta, a teenage girl experiencing the aftermath of a particularly unpleasant incident from her immediate past.
Forced to re-integrate into school life after an appreciable absence, she cannot seem to walk away from confrontation, and things get a little out of control as a result.

There is the stereotypical depiction of US high school that I (as an Englishman) have been exposed to: stratification of the student population into the haves, the have-nots and the freaks, kids driving their cars to school and a whole lot of angst over issues such as wealth, sexuality and race.

I liked the character of Atlanta. She's a strong, capable female that just can't let injustice stand. The peripheral characters were for me a little clichéd (note: clichéd given my previous exposure to such material from the US - this may be what it is actually like...what do I know...I live in the UK).

There's a suitable amount of violence and profanity that, for my mind, just push this over the line between teenage and adult fiction (at least, that's my story and I'm sticking to it).
It's a novella so, if it grips you, you'll probably finish it in a sitting or two.

All in all, I enjoyed it. It was a good little story, well executed. I've already got the next in the series and I'd definitely recommend them.

Nice one Chuck!

5.0 out of 5 stars Unexpectedly Blown Away 22 Mar 2012

I got this book when it was going for free because, while I'm a fan of Chuck's other work, I was a bit unsure about this new territory he was venturing into.

Turns out, Chuck is the master of his domain. And anything else he decides to try. The novella just blew me away. Atlanta Burns is a gritty teenager who has had some bad experiences, but unlike most of us she stood up to her bully and took care of things. She's now helping some other poor kids deal with their bullies, and getting into a whole load of trouble with just her trusty squirrel gun for support.

I loved the tone of the writing, I loved the sense of atmosphere and, most of all, I loved the colourful characters that just leapt off the page and squirmed into my brain, creating vivid images to go with everything that was happening.

If I have any complaints, it would be these two. First: like most books out there, this has a few typing errors that just burned themselves into my eyeballs. Every time it would make me cringe and think how I'd've offered free editing services just to make sure this book had come out perfect. I found only a handful of these (symbol instead of cymbal, your instead of you're, etc) so that's infinitely better than most books out there (in whatever published form), but I felt I had to point this out. Lesson for next time: if you think you've proofread enough, do it one more time.

Second: I felt like my heart was throbbing at a particular scene, just pumping in anticipation of what was surely going to be one more action-packed scene after this and BAM! Chuck pulled the rug out from under me and ended the story there. What?! This story was meant to be a novel, but sadly wasn't. Thankfully though, Kickstarter has managed to fund 2 full-length novel sequels to this gem, so I'm willing to forgive this.

Five stars fully awarded with no regrets and eagerly looking forward to the next time I will get to meet Atlanta.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Shotgun Blast 24 Feb 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
No point in recapping the story, the above description is good enough.

Atlanta Burns is an intriguing heroine - she has a violent past that has something to do with a shotgun and it's clearly damaged her. But it's also invigorated a new part of her.
As the situations she's put herself into start spiralling out of control and she finds herself powerless, she really connects as a character - we see beyond the bravado to the real girl.

The story is quite noir-ish, with unintended consequences coming from every choice by our heroine.
Wendig writes solid and easy to read prose. It's not simplistic, instead it's very direct and it carries the narrative in a powerful way.

This is due to be the first part in a series and while I may have picked Shotgun Gravy up for free when it was on offer, I'll gladly pay for the following episodes.
