The action begins from the first chapter and never lets up to the end. Even one of the worst bad guys in this particular book has redeeming qualities. Detective Jack Daniels is shown here early in her career as a relentless honest cop and God knows Chicago needs one. For Konrath fans who, like me always seem to read the books out of order, don't worry about it. All you need to know is right here. Shot of Tequila is a great detective mystery of the first order.

Tequila works for a bookie as enforcer and debt collector. (Britons should note that in the US, they ban gambling, so of course instead of respectable High Street businesses like William Hill and Joe Coral, gambling is organised by the Mafia). He falls out with the bookie when he is caught on film stealing a million dollars from the bookie's Superbowl takings. Except he didn't.
It's an early Jack Daniels story - she's only a detective, rather than the lieutenant she is to become later in Konrath's oeuvre. But the main character is Tequila - a man portrayed with some depth and a sympathy unusual in crime fiction.

I purchased this book having read the Blake Crouch Luther Kite books as they recommend that they connect somehow. Well I'm not really bothered if they don't as this was fast paced and exciting and has introduced me to a new writer. Can't wait to read the next one.
