I saw Gergiev conduct the Mariinsky Orchestra at the Sage Gateshead playing this a few years ago and what a performance.

Have been looking forward to this release and was really pleased to see it is a Hybrid SACD disk.

Performance is no let down - just brilliant playing. Recording balance is excellent.

Except .... slightly annoying thing is someone hums and grunts all the way through. It is tuneless and annoying (especially if you listen with headphones during the quieter moments). I suspect it is Gergiev himself (he makes noises in live performances too) but it is the only flaw in an otherwise brilliant recording. Shame really (and I docked a star for that reason).

Still worth it for the truly wonderful Mariinsky heart in the mouth playing.

Edit: revised from 4 stars to 2 ... the annoying background noise gets more and more intrusive and irritating every time you listen to this recording. After a few listenings it has got to the point where I can no longer hear the orchestra, just the maestro audibly gurning his way through the score.

Try the War Symphonies set by the same team from a few years ago, which includes this symphony, without the vocal pyrotechnics.
