I've never heard a finer Shostakovich 10 than this one from Neeme Järvi and the Scottish National Orchestra, and I've heard quite a few including those by Mravinsky, Jansons, Barshai and Kondrashin. Järvi paces the symphony superbly and Shostakovich's music is projected with gripping intensity throughout.
The Ballet Suite No 4 consists of three melodic and characterful pieces lasting around 13 minutes in total. As with the Ballet Suite No 5 accompanying Järvi's recording of the 5th Symphony, this is an excellent performance.
The recording was made in Caird Hall, Dundee, in May 1988 and the sound quality is slightly resonant but superbly clear. This is altogether one of the best Shostakovich discs in the catalogue.
