4.0 out of 5 stars easy really - budget DSCH re-issue . buy 18 Feb 2012
i will repeat my earlier review for the Shostakovich Qrt's olympia label release back in the late 1980's of Qrts 10,11, + 15. this Regis dbl cd is a re-issue without the original russian artwork unfortunately or quite as detailed booklet notes but at this price - the performances are top draw.

4.0 out of 5 stars more excellent + authentic DSCH, 4 May 2011

(This review is from: Shostakovich - String Quartets, Vol. 4 (Audio CD))
in addition to my other reviews of Shostakovich's remarkable quartets by other quartets- Borodins, Eder, Rubio etc. i recently rebought this cd to re-compare DSCH's recorded quartet legacy - this time from another noted Russian Quartet the aptly named Shostakovich Quartet.

i actually bought the Olympia box set of this cycle for this ensemble back in th e late nineties: then sold it on , as i already had versions by the Eders on naxos + the Borodins on Melodiya . bad move.. so - as this cd was being sold here at a decent price and it had the fantastic Suprematism artwork by IV Kluin on the cover( a contemporary of master -Kazimir Malevich but thats an aside)- i thought yum - must(re) buy!

so to the perfomances -
these recordings themselves have been highly rated sporadically in the Pengiun classical guide + in Gramophone guide for many years - + yes do indeed offer equally coruscatingly, austere yet heartfelt playing by the Russian Shostakovich Qrt. Recordings are from 1984-1988 on the Olympia label + although post-DSCH's life, still carry for me plenty of authentic soviet era life lived the hard way by this Quartet. this is conveyed in their granite like playing perhaps to the detriment of music's occasional melodic elements, but powerfully felt + portrayed here all the same.
