Another winner from Naxos, this suite from The Gadfly, from the film of 1955, just goes to prove yet again that Shostakovich's range is inexhaustible. This is very approachable music, full of gloriously stirring drama and tender melody, played here with wonderful passion by the Ukraine orchestra. The sound is first rate too, making this recording an exceptional bargain.

It has always been a disappointment that this wonderful piece of music fails to be heard in its entirety in the UK's concert halls. We are lucky if we can hear a few movements of The Gadfly and I can't remember ever seeing Five Days, Five Nights performed, even though it evokes so much of what Shostakovitch believed in - reconciliation between warring nations with its allusion to Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.

As to the recording, it is played extremely well by the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine and all the movements show this exceptional composer's gift to give us vivid moods and styles.

If there is a failing it is that the recording can at times, sound muffled or indistinct but that doesn't take away from an otherwise splendid performance and interpretation by the conductor, Theodore Kuchar.

It was good to be able to see exactly what music was on this CD and it was delivered within 3 days. Very pleased.
