Together with its 'sister' albums Shostakovich: The Jazz AlbumShostakovich: The Dance Album, The Bolt, Gadfly, Cheryomushkkithis is a very good way of dipping your toe into the wild world of Shostakovich's film music. Just about all of human life is here from the hyper-romantic Gadfly Romance to the bleak Hamlet and literally cartoonic Silly little mouse. Chailly and his Dutch super-orchestra are right on top of the idiom and the Decca engineering is late classic in-house sound. Don't expect the profundity of this composer's best symphonies or quartets but film does represent an important strand of his creative life. Probably the best single disc introduction to his work in the genre.
