Short Walks on Skye, 7 July 2010
This review is from: Short Walks on Skye (Paperback)
We have literally just returned from our third holiday in Skye, and I bought this book back in March this year to try some 'off the beaten track' walks, as we had done the more touristy things on our previous trips. I have to say it was the best few quid we spent! It is an excellent book, with walks for all ages and preferences. We managed in a week to complete 23 of them and have definitely decided to do the rest on our next trip. The walks are all interesting be they five minute walks or longer. Some, like the St Columba's Isle walk, take you only a few minutes from the main road (like literally at the side of it)into some of the most beautiful historical scenery that you just wouldn't know was there otherwise. Like wise with the St John's Chapel walk. We tried a good mix of walks - from those on a flat path, over moorland, up hills, down hills, through to fields and woodland and each one was interesting an exhilarating. There are lots of lovely family walks too. I would highly recommend this book if you are going to Skye and want to get right into the heart of the island. Pack a picnic, put your walking boots on and grab your camera...you won't be disappointed! :-)

Great ideas for exploring the Island, 13 Feb 2009
This review is from: Short Walks on Skye (Paperback)
I have to add comment following the previous review. The pocket-sized book does indeed have very short walks - as advertised - there are nine 'Easy Magic' of five minutes or under, nine 'Quick History' of fifteen minutes or under, eight 'Walks on the Wild Side' of twenty minutes or under and the remaining fourteen 'Highways to Heaven' are under forty minutes. Some of the walks are linear so you can double the time for the round trip! This is not intended to be a book for a day's walking but more a means of exploring (to quote from the book) "some of Skye's most magical places: beaches and bays, rivers, woodlands walks, churchyards, ruined castles and forts". Each walk has a line map and description including where to start, where to go, the time to allow, the type of path and 'did you know' facts about the place - often historical. Some routes are along paths, others are cross-country.
The review isn't 'tested' as we have yet to try the book on our forthcoming family holiday (ages 8-80+) but this appears to be what we need for finding places of interest off the beaten track (even if only slightly) as we explore and visit the parts of the island or when we just want to stretch our legs or find a picnic spot.

Not really a walk book, 7 Feb 2009
This review is from: Short Walks on Skye (Paperback)
This isn't really a 'walk' book. More a 'drive there in the car and get out to stretch your legs' book. Over half the walks take less than 20 mins which does stretch the definition of the word. Ideal if you're accompanied by a tired and emotional toddler!
